I just started the Fentanyl25 for my degenerative knee pain, and im still getting what everyone calls breakthru pain, and it was VERY difficult to get prescribed this, ( I think partly cuz Im only 30yrs old) so im scared to ask for a higher dose, I dont want my dr to think im just trying to get "high", what do you think?
Im scared to ask for a bigger dose?

It should also be noted that I have a fairly high "tolerance" to opiates in general...I found this out after being prescribed Norco and Hydrocodone for awhile before being prescribed the Fentanyl patch. I assume it works differently on everyone, and therefore my dr is starting me on a lower dose to be safe. But I have been on the patch for two months, I wonder if I shouldnt have said something sooner?
Yes you definantly should have asked for something stronger way long ago! However there is nothing wrong with asking now too better late than never. Wow why didnt you do something before. Alright now what you do is go in there say you have a very low tolerance for pain and you need a stronger patch you also let the doc know that you would like something for breakthrough pain i.e.norco,vicodin,etc... If he is any doc at all he shouldnt have a problem with this although if he is not a specialist in pain management that is probably where he will send you(pain management). Hope this helped some your friend michelle:) P.s. your age has nothing to do with it.
I started the 12.5 patch five weeks ago - and after the first two weeks was feeling that might be true for me too since I was having so much breakthrough- my doctor suggested that I might need to change my patch every two days instead of three- and that has indeed made a big difference.
My doctor said that the 12.5 is basically like taking three Norco 10s a day, and the 25 is like taking six. I have never needed six on a regular basis, so I definitely wanted to try to take less and see if I could make it work. Especially as most people do slowly raise their dose with this patch I did not want to raise it too quickly. Perhaps changing it every two days would be the ticket for you.
If you have med for breakthrough, keep a log of how much you need and that alone will justify increasing, and also note when in the 3 day cycle breakthrough is worse- that could point towards changing every 48.
I have been scrupulously open and honest with my PMD and if you look him in the eye and tell the truth I believe he will know.
Thing is, sad fact is people in as much pain as we are don't get high.W e get pain relief.
