dr suggested an extended release med methadone.will this help with pain?or should i suggest oxycocodone extended release? i like the way the oxycodone it helps with pain.i just dont know much about methadone for pain
I had wrote a response and my computer kicked me off and I lost it! :( Anyway, I have taken all three of these meds. I currently take OxyContin and short acting oxycodone 30mg for breakthrough. At one point my Dr tried a rotation and we picked methadone. It worked well for pain but I had a lot of side effects. nausea got better within a week or two but the thing that forced me to quit was the severe headaches I got with methadone. All opioids cause increased intercranial pressure that is why thay are not given to people who have had bad head injuries. Apparently I am very sensitive to this increase and it causes headache. According to my Dr and the pharmacist this is something that wont subside with time like the nausea does. It was a dissappointment because it worked really well for pain. Methadone and other ER drugs dont flood the receptors with medication so you dont get the same "feel" you do with oxycodone. With methadone you just feel pain relief after an hour or two. Many people complain that the medication doesnt work because they dont feel that "rush" when it kicks in. This is good though for people who dont like the woozy, drowsy... high feeling you get with oxycodone
jodiroc, a word to the wise. I know from personal experience that Methadone is a NIGHTMARE. Not while you're on it, but they can't leave you on it for very long because it literally eats into your bones. Withdrawal from Methadone may be the worst & most painful thing you could ever feel in your life. Better off dead, in many cases. Take it from me, ask your doc to work with you to come up with something else. David
I'll add you as a friend & you can contact me if you'd like to. BTW, where are you located? Also, be a pal & "Like" my answer! I work hard on here, as much time as I can spend, yet it's taking forever to rack up any points. I trust this is because most people don't want to bother doing anything for anyone else. OR, they are too worried about getting PILLS or something, to pay any attention to a guy like me with a medical background & experience. Anyway, thanks for your time. David, So. Florida
