I had to quit taking the lithium last srping because of additional liver damage. Then Invega worked great for about 6 mos. then I started rocking and lip licking. Came off that and just take Cymbalta and Abilify now. Just started Abilitfy two mos ago but still manic since before Christmas. I'm also a medical cannabis user. I really need a long term med that will control the mania without making me depressed. Depression is not the issue right now- mania is. In fact, I've heard if you give a manic person an anti-d it makes them more manic. Any experience or advice from others is appreciated.

Hello. I have shizoaffective disorder bipolar type. I have been on Lamictal and Geodon about two years now. I believe Lamictal would be a good drug for you. It controls mood symptoms in bipolar disorder. When I was manic years ago they put me on Depakote. Maybe either the Lamictal or Depakote would be best. Inquire with your psychiatrist about these two drugs. I was on Lexapro too but this is an antidepressant and anxiety drug. Lexapro would probably not help you. Invega is a good drug too but the negative of that one is weight gain. As I said I have been on Lamictal and Geodon for two years and have no longer mania or depression. I hope this helps. I wish you the best. Have a great day!
I can't add much to the suggestions already made. As I was reading your post, I too thought of Lamictal. Yes the antidepessant can cause mania but the Abilify should help with that. The addition of the Lamictal may just be the key to unlocking your problem.
I have taken Cymbalta and Abilify with good results. My sister who suffers from more mania than I takes the antidepressant, Abilify and Lamictal combination and rarely has any manic episodes.
The only other meds that I can think of for you to ask the doctor about are Depakote and Risperdal. These are both prescribed for mania and have pretty good ratings/reviews.
Good luck and keep us posted,
