If a pill is supposed to be taken 2 times a day, they mean 2 different times, not 2 at one time, That would say to take 50 mg. The reason for this is because the pills don't last all day. So you have to replace them in your body. When you get to the dose you need a day, then the dr can order metoprolol succinate, which is longer working.
