This will be my 18 foot surgery. I have been on pain meds for years. I only take one tablet a day cause I don't want to become addicted to them. I take 1/2 a vicodin in afternoon and 1/2 at night to take the edge off of my pain. I need something stong after surgery and I just don't know what to ask for.
I would like to know what is the best pain med. to be on after surgery?

My pain is severe after the surgery and so many times the pain med doesn't help. I usually get vicodin but after being on it for so long, it doesn't seem to be working anymore. Please help. I am having surgery on Jan. 20th.
Sweetie, I cannot blame you for not wanting to get addicted to pain meds. But if you are only taking 1/2 of a vicodin twice a day I don't think you have to worry about that.. As far as something stronger, couldn't you just take a whole vicodin twice a day? There are lots of stronger pain meds, morphine, oxycodone, MS Contin, the list goes on and on but again, you risk addiction.
I really don't think you have to worry about that though. Eighteen surgeries is a lot. And if you have gotten through them with vicodin, my hat is off to you. Good luck. kimmie1
I hear and feel your pain. I take a long acting morpine with a immediate release morphine for break through pain. My doctor felt that this was the best way to handle my pain on a daily basis and when I have surgery I just find myself having to depend on the breakthrough meds more. It can't hurt to ask. Also they have used percocet 6- 10 mg every 4-6 hours with a oxycodone imm for breakthrough pain. Hope this helps Good Luck and God Bless Barb
The best pain meds besides Tylenol is Tramadol. It is grouped in the narcotic family, but it is not a narcotic. It can be taken for an indefinite period of time without increasing dose and is non addictive. I've been on it for one year for serious neck strain and fibromyalgia. I have not increased the dose. It is not as affective as narcotics, but is useful for moderate to strong pain. Gives a mild lift in mood, but not a high like narcotics.
