... my son is almost 5 and has speech disorder, developmentally delayed at a 2 yr olds level and just got diagnosed as mildly retarded! hes having a brain mri to see if the meds caused brain damage(a side effect that can happen). does anyone out there have any kids that sufferd from this medicine or am i alone in this
I was on the drug for an extended period of time as well my son is seven now and he has behavioral and cognitive deficits he has also always had a speech deficit. I am from wisconsin and no one here believes me about this being my sons problem. My more recent family doctor openly admitted that he didnt know anything about the side effects and he still uses in on pregnant women, I tried to get a lawyer but because of the statute of limitations, they say I can sue I dont know what to do either I thought I was alone.
Yes! A friend of mine, and I have just realized that this drug which she knew as 'Brethine' is terbutaline according to this website and WEBMD. We both have grown children (28 & 33 yrs), 1 male & 1 female.. Each of them have been diagnosed with ADHD, vision problems, very low immune systems, etc..The girl has some other issues that involve delay of gastric emptying as well..We were both given this drug to stop premature labor. Until now, we've both been confused about their symptoms and what has caused them. Both children first presented symptoms between the ages of 4 and 6. I could tell you more, but I'm sure you get the idea. Our kids have both suffered their entire lives and their still has not been a hard diagnosis. We've just been talking and started figuring this out, so you have validated our suspicions in a way, but no ma'am, youy are not alone.
I was given terbutaline while in preterm labor with my daughter in 1991. I went into labor at 26 weeks and remained on the drug until 38 weeks. She has had anxiety problems her entire life (and some others as well) and as an adult still has problems. I absolutely believe that this drug that was given to me is responsible. I believe if there already isn't a lawsuit going for this drug given during pregnancy, that there soon will be. I'm glad I am not the only person who thinks the same!
I was on this back in 1992/93 when pregnant with my now 25 year old son during the last 2 months for preterm labor. It was known as Brethine. At the age of 11 he was diagnosed mildly mentally retarded. At the age of 8, he was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome, and at the age of 16 with schizoeffective disorder. I was initially told that fevers of 104 that he had at the age of 2 months old from chicken pox caused the mental retardation, but now I wonder if it wasn't this drug.
