i dont know if anyone else with these two illnesses feels the way i do ?does your pain medicine also help with your panic attacks?i wish someone would tell me if it does ... because my lortabs do help with my panic attacks
Lortab (hydrocodone) can interact with MAOI's, and one of the things many MAOI's do is reduce the breakdown of epidephrine (adrenaline), which is one of the primary causes of panic attacks. The fact that your lortab also helps with panic attacks is not exactly what one would call normal and certainly not what it would ever be prescribed for, but what it does for you does kinda makes sense - lortab helps with physical pain, which if you think about it logically, your pain reducing will also also help relax you, probably reduce epinephrine, and hence help with a panic attack. Normally for panic attacks you'd be prescribed anti-anxiety meds, or possible anti-depressants or some combo of both.
I too suffer from chronic back pain and panic attacks, and my pain meds (been on all kinds of them, including lortab for a long time). Actually I had the worst panic attack I've ever had while I was taking lortab several years ago, although there was a lot of other incredibly stressful things going on in my life at the time, so I'm certainly not blaming the attack on the lortabs.
Everyone's bodies and body chemistries are different, and so their reactions are all different, so if I were you I might take it as a blessing and go with it. But if you're concerned, I'd definitely call your doctor(s) and see what they have to say about it.
Ask your dr. if he can prescribe appropriate medications for each of your conditions. Lortab has a side effect of anxiety. You might be ok for now, but what if your get a full blown panic attack? First of all its too late and no amount of Lortab will help you then. Be safe, not sorry
I, too, also suffer with very severe panic attacks. So severe, that I have had to call an ambulance 6 times in the past year. Plus, several times that I had to get someone to drive me to the hospital because they always make me feel like I'm gonna die. My attacks are so severe that I cannot even get in a car, or go anywhere without taking klonopin. I also have some back pain, but not really badly. However, I used to have an addiction to vicodin, and got on methadone because of it. ( as I'm sure u know, methadone is an opiate, just like lortab.) But anyway, my point is, I have to go to a methadone clinic every morning, 6 days a week. And the strange thing about it, is like I said before, being in a car will sometimes trigger an attack. So, when I am driving to get my methadone, I will usually have a panic attack.
But, once I take my methadone, and it hits me, my panic attack ALWAYS goes away. Now that cannot just be a coincidence, ya know? And that is without taking klonopin too. Something is definately in lortab and methadone that helps. But anyway, good luck in the future with everything!!!
I suffer from chronic back pain, too. I don't get out very often bc of my pain. I don't think it's anxiety but who knows at this point but there are tines I'll be in the middle of a store, get searing back pain, start to aware, get blotchy & feel like I can't breathe ... I assume that's a panic attack, right? But I've always been told it was opiate withdrawal from my doctor. I think he's wrong bc it can happen 10 hrs or 45 mins after a pain pill. Regardless, and my point is, I've always felt my panic attacks were pain induced. And when I'm out & about I feel stuck & think, "Oh my gosh, I have to get home before this gets worse. I have to lie down before the spasms start." So have you ever considered perhaps the pain & anxiety go hand in hand? One is caused by the other? Just a thought! But... I know how you feel and am sorry for what you're going through. It's no way to live! :( Take care! My best, D
