I have mild anxiety, mild obsessing and mild social phobia and dysthymia.
'Tis recommended that one does not stay on any Benzodiazapine like Xanax for too long as addiction or tolerance may occur. That said, if you are suffering from horrible anxiety issues perhaps you should give it a go?
It will most def help with your anxiety, it will calm you down so you can just think straight a bit!
Best wishes and I hope you are feeling better very soon,
While long term use of xanax will cause dependence such that you would have to taper off rather than just stop this medicine when you discontinue, it is very effective for helping with anxiety. Not sure that it is the best for the dysthymia though. There are many antidepressants such as Zoloft or Lexapro that treat both depression and anxiety. Have you considered these?
Not sure why you picked 8 months as the time period for preventing addiction. Taking xanax for only a few months, if taken daily could cause dependence such that you would have withdrawals if you stopped abruptly. As long as you need the medicine and take exactly as prescribed, I wouldn't worry about addiction. Just be aware that if you decide to stop a medicine of this nature you have to taper off, not stop cold turkey.
I would investigate the use of Zoloft or Lexapro for your anxiety and dysthymia.
Well butterfly 2244. Xanax can be and is extemely addictive. It is I would say number 1 in regards to the Benzodiazepines. Years ago it was valium. People often become addicted to it, only to find out to late, that they are. I had to go through detox because of xanax. It was a very long and difficult recovery. There are many other medications that can curb your anxiety. The Benzodiazepines as a drug family, are addictive. Its often recommened by doctors, to thier patients to try other medications, from other drug families, before resorting to benzodiazepines. Just my thoughts on the matter. best wishes.
You know all the medications whether it be Zoloft, Cymbalta, celexa or a combination thereof can have side effects it depends on the drug, the individual and also the way in which the drug is prescribed a combination of causes and reason for reactions, I just don't believe that if xanax is prescribed in a dose in an appropriate way by a doctor who takes addiction and other things into consideration that xanax is any more of a danger than anything else, It depends on how it's prescribed, if the patient follows the prescribed dosage, I don't think it's as much the length of time as it is how and when its taken, physicians who are caring and competent enough to prescribe xanax (or any anti-anxiety medication) should take all of these things into consideration. it's sad we live in a world where people misuse drugs like xanax but chronic pain medications such as morphine and others as an example are good medicines its because they are abused and then we read about the nasty consequences that are left over in an individuals mind, funny how we zero in on the bad focus on what went wrong, yet there are other medication used for anxiety which are now being brought to the light I think it's a sad situation, I think you therefore have to find a doctor whom you trust, try what he suggests and not focus on so much what could happen especially if you're doing the appropriate thing, sometimes doctor's prescribe medications longer than what is usually expected I think it that point if we have concerns we need to discuss that with the doctor and allow him to explain his reasoning. I have the small TV on out on the enclosed front porch and they were just discussing a list of drugs (antidepressants) and talking about if you've taken these during at time in your life (expecting) and certain things happen you may have legal recourse, instead of staying focused on finding a doctor who a patient can trust who makes decisions according to whats best for the patient we constantly have waved in front of us things that can be done if certain things happen, I think we need to focus on getting the help under the best circumstances possible with hopes for the best results possible, I in no way mean to seem rude it just irritates me that when a drug is effective and can be used according to a qualified person it gets bashed but it's not the only medication that can cause problems given the right circumstances. Bottom line it is my sincere hope that you find a medication that improves things for you, not what it is but finding the thing that works and is safe for you!
