Confused about how often to take Hydrocodone. Take Oxycotin in AM and made for 12 hrs. Hydrocodone is for breakthru relief. But supposed to be able to take together??
Hi dolphin3, It should say on the prescription bottle how often it can be used. If the directions are difficult to understand, please call your doctor or pharmacist about your concerns. Some people wait for the oxycontin to start working then take the hydrocodone when their pain spikes. Please be safe and check with your doctor.
Have a nice weekend.
Like Chris said look on the bottle for the directions. Usually it is good to wait a few hours between doses of each medicine. You should be relying on the OxyContin for the majority of your pain relief with occasional use of the hydrocodone when you have pain that gets worse between doses of OxyContin. Ask your prescribing Dr how he/she wants you to take it. Be sure you ask about taking them together at the same time before you do so.
I also take both medications. The following is my regimen and gives me the best pain relief, I have checked it out with my doctor. Hope it can work for you! The goal of pain management is to minimize pain with minimal meds and fuction as normally as our bodies will let us!! Here is my Medication Regimen:I set my alarm 1 hour before rising and take my oxycotin and oxycodone. This allows me to rise almost pain free and shower, dress, and strart my day unassisted. Depending on activity you should not need any medication until your next oxycotin dose and not need the oxycodone. Perhaps halfway until your next oxycotin dosage you MAY need oxycodone if you feel any pain, do not try to make it until your next dose of oxycotin, use the oxycodone it is for breakthru pain. I find daytime is when we are most active and additional medication is needed, that is why I begin with both whe I wake up, however using both any other time is really not neccessary.
Short rest periods of ice packs and legs elevated do wonders for me, I hope you will try them. If you have any self help secrets please share them with me!! We all need to work together to get the best quality of life we can without walking around medicated to the hilt!!! I have been dealing this since 2007 after a cervical fusion c2 thru c6 and lumbar fusion L1 thru S1 with radiculapathy. We all need to work together and I am here to help!! Please let me know if this is helpful... Kris
I took that combo for years and since it take the Oxycontin so long to help me, especially when I wake up, I took Hydrcodone when I woke up. The Oxycontin didn't last me 12 hours so I took it again when I started to feel pain. If I didn't I could not get the pain stopped. I learned not to wait until I was hurting bad to take it because it didn't help then! Your bottle should tell you how often and when your doctor has prescribed them for! Best of luck, they worked for me for a lot of years!
