I have had Arachnoiditis for twenty years. I have been taking Oxycontin ( 720 mgs a day and have been using Oxynorm for Breakthrough pain 140mgs a day... My GP and a Dr at a hospice decided to put me on Methadone a few months ago. This was not as problem I take 20mgs 3 times a day. I take Tramadol 100mgs and Paracetamol 1000 mgs 4 times a day for breakthrough pain. They don't work. What other drugs for breakthrough pain would you suggest. As adhesive arachnoiditis is progressive. I am going mad
You have gone from a strong breakthrough pain reliever, Oxynorm, to a weaker pain reliever, tramadol. Since you are taking the methadone now, I would ask the doctor about hydrocodone (not sure what the brand name is in your country) or putting you back on the Oxynorm. The hydrocodone comes in a formula that includes Paracetamol so you could reduce your use of it and get better pain relief.
You might do better to have your Methadone increased . I was on hydrocodone for pain for years, & had to go to methadone for chrontic pain because they thought the opiate was causing liver problems. I was taking 120 mg a day & my husband takes 180mg a day for chrontic pain. At a higher dose you may not need a breakthrough med. Just my thoughts...
i would see about having my methadone increased. Taking paracetamol 1000mgs 4 times a day would certainly not do your kidney any good whatsoever. Paracetamol is only a mild form of pain killer so its any wonder you are on such an incredible high amount. I would rather taked ibrofuren than paracemtamol but each to their own. Look into methadone as a pain management medication. In Aust u get only one dose a day so if you are taking 20mg 3 x daily ( i have never heard of it being dispensed this way ) its only 60mg which in the world of methadone, isnt really that high. You could find the right dose of methadone and knock out all the other meds you have listed that you take, i think that has to be easier and more effective.
Because methadone is a synthetic opiate, while it may take the pain away and help u sleep and generally let u function normally as human being, there will be a time where you may have to come off the methadone and like any medication comes the hard work. Look into it. People always think methadone is taken by folk with heroin addicion but it is also used in the treatment of pain. all the best for the future. Skins1970
