It is a very difficult situation as the parents are enablers. When this relative was in the hospital, he was lucid and seemed to be doing better. Once he got home, he sleeps constantly, even falls asleep when eating! You would think a doctor would figure out this addiction. Would the overuse of ativan show up in a blood test?
Yes, it sounds like your relative is over doing the ativan if he is falling asleep in his food. Are you sure he is only taking ativan or is it possible he has been prescribed something else that makes him sleepy?
The ativan could definitely be tested for in a blood test and it would show the concentraiton of the drug and therefore whether the person is taking more than prescribed.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure there is much you can do. You can't talk to the doctor because of privacy laws. You could approach the parents and the patient and tell them that you are concerned and why.
