I have degenerative disc disease and bulging disc.I have been on hydrocodone 10/500mg 4 times a day for quite a while now. The doctor wanted to change me to morphine or oxycontin. I am allergic to both. So he decides to put me on duragesic patches 25mcq. I heard that it is the same as a morphine patch..is that true? Please help me if you can.
it certainly is not morphine. Fentanyl is a synthetic opiate which can be used when a patient is allergic to morphine. Hydrocodone is a partial synthetic opiate (I'm not 100% sure about that though) so the fentanyl will be fine. Fentanyl is very powerful and makes hydrocodone look like aspirin. He is starting you of on the second lowest dose with 12.5mcgs being the lowest. 25mcgs is a quarter of a mg, so that should give you an idea at how strong this drug is.
Hydrocodone is not a good drug when used for chronic pain as all you accomplish taking it chronically is becoming a addict. This is why he put you on the patch, you won't have to pop pills every couple hours day after day trying to control your pain.
You may find you are dizzy and/or a bit sedated but this will pass, so give it some time to work. Use this drug as prescribed as it is a powerful painkiller... Good luck... Dave
My pain doc has told me that the "pain relief is equivalent to that of morphine." It is not the same medicine. Fentanyl is Fentanyl and morphine is morphine. Fentanyl is actually 10 times stronger than morphine. Ex: I use the fentanyl 25mcg/hr patch. It is about like using 60mg/day of morphine. We are talking micrograms vs. milligrams... Fentanyl is one of the best pain meds out there. I don't see how you have ONLY used vicodin for so long! That is amazing! The only other option for you, besides fentanyl, would be dilaudid. The problem with it is I don't believe it comes in a long acting form. I would definately try the fentanyl. If this doesn't help, you can research it till your heart's content. The internet is a great research tool! I sincerely hope I have helped in some way. Please let me know how things go for you. Heather
I am also allergic to morphine. I'm allergic to a lot of stuff... My husband was on a fentanyl patch for two years and removed himself from it. He was on a high dose and I worried constantly he was going to fall asleep when he drove. He would be eating and almost fall over asleep. It was like living with a zombie. When we almost had an auto accident due to his driving while wearing the patch I told him he was going to have to find another med for his pain. He agreed. Please be careful with this drug. Also, he was trying to lower the dose to see if that would help and cutting the patch... the doctor told him that was dangerous and to NEVER do that. I hope you find something that works. It's hard to deal with living with pain... I know and so does he.
