risperdal and concerta 1.5 of RISPERDAL in the morning and before bed time and 18 mg of concerta in the morning is it safe and what are the side effect
These meds are safe. The risperdal is a benzo-derivative antipsychotic medication. It is mainly used to control thought processes and decrease irritability. For most people, it causes drowsiness, which is good that he has a night time dosage. What you want to be sure and watch for is any signs of EPS because this drug can cause those symptoms( look for stiffness to occur in his neck and possible head turning at odd angles and/or swelling of the tongue-if these occur call his doctor); not everyone experiences this, but it can happen and it does look very frightening and is very scary to children because they don't know what's happening usually-only that they can't move their head or talk good. Be aware that the drug does sometimes cause constipation so if it occurs, push lots of water. It also causes dry mouth so he may need hard candy or gum for his daytime dose just to help with that.
The Concerta is actuallya cerebral stimulant that is specifically for his ADHD. It can make some people restless and/or talkative but not everyone. This medication also causes dry mouth. You'll want to limit his caffiene intake because of this medication (especially chocolate and sodas) because it can cause increased irritability and over-stimulation. Also, this medication will make him feel more tired by the end of the day so he will need to get plenty of rest.
I hope this information is of some use. Good luck and God bless.
