... does lithium need to work? I am taken 1200mg daily?
I copied the following information for you. It seems you should see improvement within one month. If it doesn't seem to be helping, please contact your doctor to let them know. You may need a dose adjustment or a different type of medication. Good luck to you and hope you feel better soon.
"Indications and Usage for Lithium
Lithium carbonate is indicated in the treatment of manic episodes of manic-depressive illness. Maintenance therapy prevents or diminishes the intensity of subsequent episodes in those manic-depressive patients with a history of mania.
Typical symptoms of mania include pressure of speech, motor hyperactivity, reduced need for sleep, flight of ideas, grandiosity, elation, poor judgment, aggressiveness and possibly hostility. When given to a patient experiencing a manic episode, Lithium carbonate may produce a normalization of symptomatology within 1 to 3 weeks."
Both of these ladies have given you very good info on lithium. It does work, but as Suzanne pointed out, it can take up to 3-4 weeks before you will notice any real change. 1200mg may sound like a lot, but it's not; lithium can be given as much as 1800mg a day. 1200mg is about mid-range so if your doctor needed to increase your dosage, he/she has room to do so. Give it some time, but if you still feel the same at the end of 4 weeks, please do tell your doctor. And remember to take in about 1-2 liters of fluid a day to keep yourself hydrated-lithium is a salt compound and it will deplete your body of fluids, which can cause a lot of other problems. Be safe and good luck. Post back if you need help with anything else or have other questions.
