Added 24 May 2010:
I have had MRI's and gone to neurologists, I feel at times i am losing my mind.. I also take topamax, effexor xr.. Sometimes these do take the edge off but i dont want to have to live the rest of my life on all of these medications.. I would be happy to settle on one or two every so often.. Thanks
I know how you feel. I'm not just saying that either. My daughter suffered migraines for years. They were so bad she would vomit from the pain. The doctor prescribed her pre-loaded injections of Imatrex (sp?) Did you ever think maybe the meds you take may actually cause the migraines to be worse? However, if the oxycodone does helps some, ask for an increase in the dosage. Some people say that morphine actually gives them headaches. Also, right before the meds begin to kick in, take a hot shower and right before you get out, turn the water to full blast cold. Let it run on your head until it hurts from the cold. It helps numb the pain. Have ice packs ready too. Put the ice on the back of your neck and on the top of your head. Keep your eyes covered and keep an ice cold washcloth on your forehead. What also helped my daughter was a good head massage. Hopefully you have someone to help you out.
Have them run their fingers through your hair, front to back, and use the thumbs to massage the back of the neck, up by the base of the neck. Rub with the fingers deep enough to relax the muscles. I sure hope you find relief. I hate to see people suffering so badly. Good luck to you and I hope you get these debilitating headaches under control. If there's anything I can do, just ask. I could do a little research, a prayer if you want... whatever. You deserve to live a life free of pain.
I used to have migraines almost everyday for years. I really know how you feel. I would lay in a dark quiet room with a migraine and get scare I had a brain tumor. I would think to myself, I am going to die from this headache which would make my pain so bad I wanted to just die from it. I would get so sick I would be throwing up which made my head beat more and I thought my head was going to explode.I had a lot of tests when I was younger and the doctors found nothing and I had one doctor tell me it was all in my head. I finally found a pain doctor that work with me. It was sort of a long process but well worth it. The first thing he did was to make sure there was nothing medically wrong with me. I got my eyes tested because when I read a lot I would get migraines. I kept of food diary and found out that certain foods like anything with cheese in it or dark chocolate was bad. Wine was one thing that would trigger a migraine right a way. So I had to stay away from those things.
I kept a migraine diary keeping track of things that are going on and around my life. From that we notice that weather played a part in my migraines. Just before it storm, I would have a migraine. Also any family stress trigger one, too. After about a year of trying a combination of medicines I got to the point that I had fewer migraines and now I have maybe one sometimes 2 a month but I usually can stop them. I now take Topamax , 150 mg a day and if I do start to feel a migraine coming on, I take 1 or 2 tablets ( depending how bad my pain is ) of Maxalt 10 mg and if possible lay down in a dark, quiet room for 10 minutes to a 1/2 hour just until I feel the medicine working. I also have to do my part. I stay away from any foods, drinks, smoke or anything that triggers my migraines. I got rid of my husband who was causing most of my stress in my daily life. It was time for that to happen. That is what works for me but everyone is different. You need to find what works for you. The most important thing I can tell you is to find a doctor who believes you! Don't quit until you find one. They are out there. Sign up for emails to be sent to you about migraines. I get them all the time about a med they are using for something else they now finds it works for migraines. If I can be of any help to you, just email me. Take care of yourself, Cherie
I feel for you! I've suffered from migraines since the age of 9. I used to come home from school and throw up because I hurt so bad! Migraines are just awful and people who don't have them just don't understand. It's not the kind of headache you just take an aspirin and get over it. One thing I noticed was when I was on birth control pills my headaches were the worst. I had my tubes tied and they (the headaches) got much less frequent and were less in duration. I know someone suggested ice but for me Ice was making it worse. I use moist heat packs called a Bed Buddy-you can get them at most drug stores like Walgreens for about 10 dollars. You warm them in the microwave for 1-2 minutes. These are life savers for me! I lay one across my neck and one over the top of my head or over my eyes.
It seems to help relax the muscles that tighten up in response to the pain. Another funny thing I found that works sometimes is to take my pain meds and drink a cup of Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime tea. It has Chamomile in it and it seems to relax me and helps the pain medicine to be more effective. I have to be in a dark quiet room. Someone else mentioned getting an eye exam to be sure you are not straining from poor vision also I recommend checking your blood pressure during a headache as well as time to time when you don't have symptoms to make sure this is not a factor. Massage works well too! I have my husband rub my shoulders, the base of my neck and my scalp. Sometimes it helps for him to gently squeeze my head between his hands-he puts his hands on either side of my head around the temple area and gently applies a squeezing pressure. I know that sounds crazy but for me it works. I also agree with the advice of the person who mentioned a food diary. I definitely have food triggers-dark red wine and tomatoes really get me bad! I also agree to find a good sympathetic Dr. who will work with you to find what works for you
because it seems to be so different for everyone! I also take muscle relaxers with my pain pills. This seems to help the pain meds to work better as well. Good luck to you and I hope you find relief!!
