I take neurontin along with soma, vicodin, and naprosin for it. Every once in a while I get this muscle spasm right up my lower back that makes me sit straight up and does it ever hurt! Has anyone else experienced this and is it normal?
Yes, I have them several times a day and yes it's normal. The neurontin and soma is prescribed for that. Your disc is a rubber like cushion between the vertabrates (made up of collagen, water, and it's interwoven different ways for strength) The inner part of the disc (nucleus pulposus) is water and a gel like material that resists compression. The facet joints are like mini discs closer to the back of the spine. That's where the nerves are closest to. So when you sit or move a certain way, it touches or compresses that nerve and sends a bolt of lightening either up or down (sometimes out to the sides) and hurts like heck. They usually go away after a minute or two. How long have you been on the neurontin and soma? The soma will only relax your muscles, it's the neurontin that should help with nerve pain best. Sometimes when stenosis is involved (narrowing of the canal) it can also cause these sharp spasm like pains. Good luck to you. I know how you feel and wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy!
