Why would a knowledgeable Dr. like Dru Pinsky cold turkey this guy if he didn't think subs was equal to methadone or heroin? Should I start tapering my son whether he likes it or not? Are subs worse than methadone or am I just not informed? Do they really repair the brain cells?
The suboxone will heal the receptor sites but recovery and tapering will depend on how long someone was addicted, how much they were taking, what they were taking and how damaged the receptor sites are. The neurotransmitters go either on vacation, or retire, depending on these factors. If the abuse was 10 years or longer and chronic, the brain may be permanently damaged. It would be good if you can ( legally ) speak to your son's doctor to get the doc's opinion of how far along he was when he went on suboxone. If it is tapered properly, he should feel fine. This is coming from someone who has successfully tapered from 12 milligrams to 1 milligram. I did a taper every 4 to 6 weeks.
