... now I don't know what to do. I need to taper off it but don't have any to taper off of... my doc wants to try regular tranxene but is there a way to get the SD form somewhere? I'm afraid to go thru a withdrawl. I've been cutting my halves in half again and am getting anxious just from trying to figure this out.
Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be anything equivalent to Tranxene-SD Half Strength (11.25 mg) tablets on the market. There are generic versions of Tranxene available, but not in SD form. Tranxene SD Half Strength is a once daily (long acting) formulation of Tranxene - and is technically the same as taking one 3.75 mg tablet three times a day.
As you have been taking Tranxene for so long, it would make sense to stay on it (and not taper off) so your doctor is right to suggest regular Tranxene. The alternative to Tranxene-SD Half Strength is one 3.75 mg tablet three times a day - which does mean a step backwards in terms of convenience. It does mean however that your body will still be getting the same amount of Tranxene and you shouldn't suffer from any sort of withdrawal symptoms. Tranxene SD is usually only ever given to patients who have been stabilized on the regular Tranxene so chances are you have taken it before (a long time ago) with good results. Try not to worry - all you should notice is the hassle factor of remembering to take the regular Tranxene. Good luck.
Hello ksuec. There really is not that great a difference between Tranxene and the Tranxene SD. Both are long acting benzodiazepines. I doubt (not knowing your dose guessing its 7,5 mg)that by taking the regular drug, you will notice a difference. You could ask your doctor to perscribe you another drug from the same family such as Valium. Both drugs are almost identical in thier chemistry (the manner in how they work) Best of wishes to you, pledge
