The neurologist prescribed Cymbalta for pain. Since it is also an anti depressant my "psych" nurse is taking me off the Celexa. The latter worked great, but she said it was really not necessary to be on both. So now I'm on Cymbalta. I'm afraid of depression returning, but if it's such a similar drug I'm hoping I won't even notice. She has me cutting the Celexa dose in half for two weeks, then stopping completely. Any effects I might experience?
I have been on Celexa for quite some time with great results. I was just prescribed Cymbalta?

I've been on 40mg Celexa and was told to take half for two weeks and then stop. The Celexa was prescribed for depression and the Cymbalta for muscular type pain (from MS.) Since they are so close to being the same thing I was told it was pointless to take both. I'll be seen again in six week for the depression to see if I've noticed anything from coming off Celexa.
Hi MJSpecial and welcome. I really don't understand why they are taking you off Celexa and switching you to Cymbalta if you are having great results with the Celexa. Do your doctors communicate? I feel this is very important. I mean geesh why mess with something that is already working? I know that Cymbalta has been touted as "the anti-depressant" for people with chronic pain but from what I understand (and I am def no expert) anti-depressants in general help with chronic pain. I don't know this just doesn't sound right to me. Again, I'm no doctor but I would have to question this change. There are a lot of people here that know much more about these meds than me so I hope they will give you some feedback. It might also help if you added some detail about what kind of problems you have that are causing you pain and if you are on any other meds. I hope everything works out for you sweetie.
Hello MJSpecial. Your doctor is correct. The cymbalta will help your pain as well as fighting your depression. The reason your nurse is taking you of from celexa is because the cymbalta and celexa are considered to be a high risk to your health when combined. So, unless its necessary, and the dividends out weigh the risks, its not advised to do so. Not knowing your dose of celexa, guessing its 20mg, you might feel, panic, irritabilty, anxiety but not necessarily so. I stopped celexa and it went smooth, no major problems. Very best to you, hope you find the cymbalta to be a great medication to be on,
