To Marja Wren - chewing gum definitely helps me. Make sure it's sugarless. Personally I chew Extra Dessert Delights but I'm sure any flavor of sugarless will help. I pray you find help because after 3 years of this condition nothing has given me complete relief. Benzo drugs help and I take a hydrocodone near bedtime. Good luck and let me know how you are doing!
Biotine products are the best brand in the market for burning mouth. They have toothpaste, gum, mouth spray, mouth wash, gel, etc. I found out about it years ago when my mother had cancer, and they radiated her throat. She couldn't barely talk or eat, but the biotene helped alot.
I am being treated for severe REFLUX!! I have been taking reflux med since 1989. I went to an allergist 2 weeks ago, and he very directly told me that the burning is caused by stomach acid going up into the mouth, burning the gums, lips, nasal cavity. His name is Dr. Henry Kanarek in Overland Park Kansas. Over these two weeks, I am getting better. The last two days has been almost normal!! I still have to watch what I eat, but I am taking Omeprazole 40 mg 2 x daily, CVS nasal mist for extra moisture am and pm. Restasis for dry eyes am and pm, Evoxac 30 mg (for dry mouth due to meds) 2 x daily. My GI doc 2 years ago wasn't aware that acid could do this to your mouth. This is the real deal. Find a doc that will try to help you NOW.
Good luck!
I've been taking Alpha Lopic Acid (I started with 600 mg and am now taking 2400 mg in morning and 2400 mg at night) and it has gotten the burning and swelling of BMS under control. I started this regiment three years ago and the best acting ALA is time released. ALA effectiveness and BMS is well researched by the medical dermatology community. Good luck
Please help me! What kind of swelling did you experience? I have similar symptoms, but doctors can't find the reason. Thank you!

Potentate, I take stomach (H2) reducing acid meds, and they don not help my mouth in the least!! What are you doing with you diet? I was on Evoxac for a long time due to the dryness in my mouth, but the sided effects were unbearable!!! I already have a problem with uncontrollable sweating, and this caused me to swear 24/7. I was so miserable. Glad that I had saliva in my mouth, miserable that I was sweating continually. It wears you out!! What kind of food are you taking or avoiding?? Thanks!
I've only been doing this for 2 weeks and I take Evozac at lunch and bedtime. I'm not having any side effects yet--- My allergist said that since I had been taking protoprazole for so long, apparently it wasn't the right medicine. I'm staying away from spicy foods, citrus, any thing that upsets the stomach. I have also elevated the head of my bed again to help the stomach acid drain better. Your response has me uneasy that perhaps my doc hasn't met up with "burning mouth syndrome". He is just so confident that I just have to believe!!! Today has been more troublesome with the burning than yesterday was. Each day is so different. But it is better than one year ago. One day last week, I ate Lasange for lunch and then some salsa for dinner. Boy did I pay for that! But that also made me realize how much the acid affected my mouth. I see Dr. Kanarek again Nov 14th. We'll see what he says at that time. I just hope we are on the right track here.

Does your nose burn too? Mine is right in the nostrils and up between my eyes. He said that is all reflux reactions.
Honestly, I have never known acid reflux to affect your mouth with burning and your nose too. My husband has severe acid reflux, in fact he has to have an endoscopy every year to make sure that he doesn't come down with Barrett's esophagus. I have a very good (young) friend who had that happen, and the survival rate is something like 16%. I honestly think that you have to see a gastroenterologist. You do need an endoscopy too. This is far too serious for an allergist.

Yes, the allergist has the correct idea with the med for a dry mouth which causes burning, BUT... unless you have ever experienced the acid reflux going up into your mouth, gums and nasal cavity, YOU WOULD KNOW IT!!! I almost called 911 the first time my husband had the reflux into his larynx from his esophagus. It causes your larynx to close, a reflex so that the reflux does NOT get into your lungs. in other words, YOU CAN'T BREATH, AND YOU KNOW IT!! If this has happened to you, then I can see it going into your nasal passages etc., but seriously, you have to jump out of bed two to three times a WEEK with this problem, for the burning to continue, otherwise it would heal. I hope you understand what I am saying, and making myself clear. My husband couldn't talk, and was gasping for air, and this is the pattern because of the reflux. It simply can't happen to you unless you are aware. If you aren't aware of the reflux going that high, then you are dead.
If this is true and the reflux is THAT bad, then you need to say goodbye to this idiot of an allergist who thinks that he knows what he is doing, and say hello to a board certified gastroenterologist. Seriously, your cells change with the constant reflux, and turn into cancer. If you would like to pursue this further, please PQ me. I might be completely off base with what is happening to you, but I sure know that you should NOT be on OTC meds with acid reflux that severe. There are much better meds available.
very interesting. I've had burning mouth, tongue, gums for over three years. I've had several dentists, ENTs, gastro tell me that this could not possibly have anything to do with my acid reflux LPR. I've gone as far as to have TIF surgery to control my reflux... still my mouth burns. I take one omerprolze 20 once a day, but I've taken all kinds of acid reflux drugs over the 10 years I've had it. I always thought that perhaps the burning mouth and the acid reflux were connected, but have never found a doctor who agreed with me. Maybe I'll increase my omerprozole to two a day and see if the burning subsides.
I am also thinking this has to do with anxiety. My teeth hurt more in the afternoon. My nose at this point is better. I take 1/4 of a .05 Larazapam in the afternoon around 3:00 and that seems to help it calm down a bit. You, as well as others have said that the reflux meds haven't helped. That discourages me. Especially since you had the surgery. That's REALLY discouraging! It may turn out that my doc hasn't been introduced to burning mouth syndrome. I've got to keep the faith.
Or maybe your allergist knows more than my doctors. I'd definitely be encouraged by anyone in the medical community who knew anything about burning mouth. If what you are doing works for you, that's wonderful... keep doing it! Just in case your allergist is on to something, I took another omerprozole after reading your post.
Dear Hawkins6,
Do you notice your teeth hurt after eatting? My gums upper and lower front, up my nose with burning right in the nostrils. My tongue only burns if the acid is really bad and my tongue gets coated. I wear hard contacts, and I'm 58 years old. Restatis has helped my eyes, but I had to back off to using it at bedtime only. I think I was putting too much in. I don't notice the burning if I keep busy and am distracted. That why I think some of this is anxiety related which would make the acid increase. I take a1/4 of a .05 lorazapam around 3 or 4 oclock if my teeth really hurt. That seems to help. I appreciate your feedback and comments.
For me, the paid is more of a burning in the back left side of my mouth. I thought at first it was a cap and post I had put in years ago, but to avoid the cost of having it removed, I had the tooth behind it pulled... the very last molar on that side. Now the pain seems to "pool" in the socket where the tooth was. The clonzapam that I take relaxes me and helps me fall asleep, That's the best part of the day, as when I sleep, the pain goes away. That's why I quesion the acid reflux effect. you'd think that laying horizonally would cause more acid to end in your mouth. I so find that if I am really preoccupied, I don't notice the burning. Plus, I have tried to convince myself that the pain fee;s good... reverse phychology perhaps. Every doctor and dentist I've seen says it's neurological... a cana root nerve ending gon awry. But Lyrica and Gabepentin haven't helped much. Like somebody else mentioned, it seems to ebb and tide.

Sometimes, like today, it really is bad, than I'll go three or four days when it hardly bothers me. I have found that most remedies work for 3 - 4 weeks, before my body seems to adapt to it, than it's time to change drugs. I do use the nedi pot for moisturizing my nasal passages and have had times when the tip of my nose seens to be tingly. I can send you a list of the remedies I've tried. What we all really need is a doctor who is up on this syndrom.

I have had dry eyes occassionally... expecially my eyelids where i had surgery a few years ago. I just moisturize them. I've had spells of dry mouth..undoubtedly from some drug that I was testing. Ice chips, gum and mouth guarde are my saving grace. The backs of the my top front teeth hurt sometimes, but i think it's caused by my tongue pushing on them..who knows... one dentist just tried to convince me it was TMJ and for $3000 he could try to cure it... no thanks, I need a little more proof of that!
I am brushing my teeth with Sensodyne toothpast without whitening. That has help my teeth from hurting so. I would be curious as to how old everyone is. I was 56 when this started and am now 58 and am female. Thanks! Wylene
I am 36 years old and have been suffering from what I can only determine to be primary burning mouth syndrome for about 6 months now-- maybe more. I Don't have any dryness in my mouth and it doesn't seem to make much of a difference what I eat or drink. It seems to burn when it wants to-- And that is usually every day starting at 9 or 10, and it gets worse as the day goes on. I've had an MRI, blood tests, saliva tests, and urine tests-- all of which yielded nothing conclusive. Alcohol helps but mostly because it makes me not care. Chewing gum also helps (sugar free) but my jaw gets tired after chewing gum all day! Worst part is I am a dentist and feel like my profession has let me down. Everywhere I look for answers in the literature all I can find is more questions. No one seems to know what causes this.

I have a normal salivary flow rate, I don't have any systemic diseases, I don't take medication, I don't appear to be allergic to anything (I've tried eliminating things like gluten to no avail) The only possible cause is I apparently have low hormone levels, however, I am not peri menopausal according to my fsh and lh levels. Also I do not have any symptoms outside my mouth like burning sinuses or throat (which I would attribute somewhat to reflux) Would just like to know if anyone out there has similar symptoms and what, if anything, has helped. I have to say that this is driving me crazy and robbing me of my enjoyment of life.
Interesting... I just got diagnosed with a hiatal hernia. I never really thought that I had a reflux issue, but instead burp constantly and loudly I might add especially after eating. I wonder if stomach acid is sneaking its way up my esophagus and causing this debilitating, painful condition I don't have nasal issues like you do. I am on Protonix to reduce the stomach acid for now. Like "potentate2013" I pay for it when I eat spicy foods or foods that are typically recommended for avoidance. Sounds like you have Sjogren's-like symptoms. Has anyone considered that? I'm glad you are getting better!
