i need to know how much he can take without hurting his major organs
You can read about the dosing for methadone for pain (and opiate detox) at the following page: https://www.drugs.com/dosage/methadone.html#Usual_Adult_Dose_for_Pain
The usual maximum for pain is 80mg a day though it is prescribed in higher doses for some people particularly those who are taking it for opiate detox.
Hope this helps,
Many full mu opioid drugs have no ceiling of effect meaning that as long as they can tolerate a dose without serious side effects, the limit is to give increasing increments until either pain relief is obtained or side effects, like respiratory depression, nausea, constipation etc., prevent an escalation in dose. That limit is different for each individual. So really, it depends on what he can tolerate and as Laurie said, that tolerance can be pretty high for some, especially those who have used opioids for long periods of time.
I've heard the only limit is how much the body will tolerate (and a doctor will prescribe, of course). As long as the body is still able to eat, sleep and eliminate waste it is possible to get up to enormous doses. It is normal for the body to build up tolerance to an opiate and need increases over time. Some doctors switch their patients to different pain meds after awhile in an attempt to thwart this tolerance, but that even is very tricky with methadone. There are sacrifices to be had with long term use of an opiate - bad teeth, liver problems, slow down of the GI tract, chronic dry eyes, etc. but that is the tradeoff for control of the pain. I know of incredibly high doses of Methadone for former heroin users, and once knew someone who was on 300 mcgs of the Fentanyl patch and still used 6 1200 mcg Actiq lollipops each day. The human body is amazing with it's ability to adapt, isn't it? I hope your son is able to get pain relied for his condition - best wishes - EJ
