I have a 46 year old mildly retarded sister whose has just recently started using this drug for mood swings. We first started out with 25 mg 2x a day. Was still having problems so the doctor increased it to 25mg 3x a day. Now we are trying 50mg in the morning and 25mg 2x a day. Just wondering if things ever get better or if maybe this is not the right one. We have tried geodone and risipidal prior to this.
In clinical studies of Seroquel for the treatment of schizophrenia, people taking the drug experienced improvement in their schizophrenia symptoms (including hallucinations and suspicious-ness) when compared to those not taking the drug.
Previous clinical studies have also shown it to be effective in the treatment of bipolar disorder. In these studies, the drug was effective for treating episodes of mania or depression and also helped prevent symptoms of bipolar disorder from returning. For bipolar depression episodes, Seroquel reduced suicidal thinking and improved the overall quality of life. For bipolar mania episodes, it helped to decrease the manic symptoms.
Did you try to seek an second opinion? No disrespect towards the doctor who prescribed the med, but it would always be better to see a second opinion, the motive is to treat your sister in the best possible way, hope the info helps & she is soon well!
Please do not change meds or self medicate, just for your kind information.
