it is quite dangerous, correct... does it counteract its ability to work as it should?
Yes this is very dangerous, your friend is playing with fire, and if he carries on he will get burned.
The mixture specially with seroquel (quetiapine) can be very dangerous to his life as well as prozac, people taking seroquel (atypical antispychotic) and prozac antidepresant should avoid alcohol at all costs. You must help your friend realize he is playing with his life.
Seroquel can cause a life-threatening condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) this is on it´s own.
Seroquel interacts with alcohol, making it very dangerous.-
Prozac, sometimes people are warned to avoid alcohol while taking it . This is because alcohol and medicationslike Prozac act upon similar chemicals in the brain. The concern is that Prozac will increase the effects of alcohol -- whether this means increasing symptoms of depression or affecting motor skills.-
Interactions between your selected drugs
fluoxetine ↔ ethanol
Applies to: Prozac (fluoxetine), Alcohol (contained in alcoholic beverages) (ethanol)
GENERALLY AVOID: Alcohol may potentiate some of the pharmacologic effects of CNS-active agents. Use in combination may result in additive central nervous system depression and impairment of judgment, thinking, and psychomotor skills.
MANAGEMENT: Patients receiving CNS-active agents should be warned of this interaction and advised to avoid or limit consumption of alcohol. Ambulatory patients should be counseled to avoid hazardous activities requiring complete mental alertness and motor coordination until they know how these agents affect them, and to notify their physician if they experience excessive or prolonged CNS effects that interfere with their normal activities.
ethanol ↔ quetiapine
Applies to: Alcohol (contained in alcoholic beverages) (ethanol), Seroquel (quetiapine)
Quetiapine has been reported to potentiate the cognitive and motor effects of alcohol. The mechanism of action is not known. Alcohol should be avoided by patients who are receiving quetiapine.
I take seroquel, and in the past prozac and avoided drinking at all.-just some input.-
You are a good friend, do the right thing and help you friend---
