has anyone on an antidepressent had abilify added to it? if so how did it help with the depression, has it worked better with the antidepressent? just trying to find other ways of helping my depression/anxiety/panic disorders. also my dr told me i could switch to cymbalta 30 mg once daily, has anyone on this medication have great outcome with this? ive heard some good things but not enought to want me to start to atleast try.
I take abilify for maintenance bipolar disorder. However, I'd like to mention a study independently taken by two researchers which was completed in May 2011 (one of the gentlemen being from Harvard, the other from UCLA). The study was the first of it's kind, as the ONLY trial ever conducted on this drug was conducted by the drug company itself, and the researchers found a number of flaws in the abilify trial - too short, the control group developed symptoms due to sudden drug cessation, etc. This new study was reported upon both on CNN and in the LA TImes. The data suggests that it may not be an effective medication for maintenance bipolar disorder (as opposed to acute treatment), and that there are not enough facts in yet as to it's effectiveness in treatment.
I also heard that it may be a questionable drug when used as an "add-on" for things like depression, as in reality it is an anti-psychotic medication, and has been shown to be ineffective for certain disorders (anorexia being cited as an example), when it has historically been used for things other than it's original intention.
Abilify is a med that helped when me with some ptsd issues. I've gone to a therapist for sometime, and as a result I generally don't need it any more. I also struggle with depression as well as panic attacks and anxiety as a whole. If anxiety and depression are the only problems, I do hope that a benzo type med is in the mix. Benzos have been around for around 50 years now, and are shown to one of the safer type of meds out there. There is a very bad rap with these drugs due to the their fame for being difficult to stop taking. Many docs avoid these completely due to their bad image. The fact is however that benzos are much safer than abilify or other anti-psychotic meds. I took abilify more or less cause the depression in combo with the flashbacks of years of repressed memories became dangerous for me. I just want to make sure that its not being used as a primary anti-anxiety med, cause it really is some potent and potentially dangerous in comparison to other drugs,
I took abilify in combination with... what was that drug? Can't remember. I am not bi-polar, which is what it was developed to treat. Way too many docs are using it off-label "to boost the effectiveness of anti-depressants." I believe it can be a life-saver for some folks with true bi-polar disorder. It can cause big weight gains, make you loopy, and has a very real risk of causing tardive dyskinesia, unfortunately a risk most drugs in that class carry. A serious talk with your doc about this is in order, and if he/she blows off your concerns without really listening I'd find a new doc. best, heartsgrace
Just wanted to share that I have been on Abilify for over 6 years with excellent results. I also have taken Cymbalta with good results though I switched to Pristiq because I was sleeping too much. Anyway, I would try the Cymbalta first, you may have to eventually increase it to 60mg which is the theraputic level, then see how you do. The Abilify is more for mood swings though it does help enhance the antidepressant. One step at a time though.
Hi Yall, Please don't get me wrong about my comment on Abilify. I really was not commenting on the drug it's self. I was making fun of their commercial on TV. I dislike all of the drug commercials. Like the one for lunesta, little butter flies all over, this women saying she had a great night's sleep ever. All of them, to me are so misleading. Yall have a great day, I am totally off of all meds except Wellbutrin 150mgm, I am slowly working up to a dose of 200mgm. My Quack, Psychotic, doctor with noTexas license, Told me after 3 doses @ 100mgm to go up to 200 mgm. That did not set well with me at all. See Ya
