gives you pain medication and was told that i have a pain contract why did i get terminated and lose my regular pain medication the surgery was an emergency hystorectomy
I am tying to find out the protocol for pain contracts and if you have surgery and your surgeon?
Added 5 May 2011:
i did let my doctor know about the surgery 2 weeks in advance and asked the doctors secretary what i should do and her answer was that the surgeon would take care of my pain meds and it would not interfere with my regular pain contract so after the surgery my regular meds were due and i asked if my son could pick them up for me because i am not healed yet and the pain contract comittee person called me and said i violated my contract i explained what happened and my surgeon sent every report and records to my pc and my pc didnt even know the pain comittee cancelled me and then my doctor was upset because i have never done anything wrong with my contract never got meds early or had a dirty ua or anything and was trying to fix the situation and the pain comittee said i asked for an increase in my pain meds which was a lie they wouldnt even listen to me or let me speak to my pc and refused to return my phone calls i still dont know what to do they refuse to let me see my doctor this is riverbend medical in agawam mass
When you sign a pain contract, ALL your pain management has to come from the Dr you have the contract with. It is pretty harsh to terminate you on the basis of an emergency surgery though. Was this the first time you filled anything from another Dr? If it was a first offense that is pretty harsh but unfortunately some clinics have to be. What you probably should have done was called your PM Dr to let him know you had emergency surgery and gotten the OK for pain pills from the surgeon or the surgeon should have notified your PM Dr so he could order your pain medicine. Was this over meds given in the hospital or was it from an Rx you filled once you were discharged? Your pain contract will usually state that ALL pain mangement has to be managed through your PM Dr.
Sometimes it allows for meds given in the hospital and in an emergency but filling an Rx after you get released violated the contract. That is where you would need to have notified him that you has surgery and let him manage your outpatient pain. You might try to see if you explain the situation to him and if it was a first offense he might let you off with a warning and allow you to come back. Always be sure you have a copy of your contract so you know the exact wording and what it allows in an emergency.
my pm told me to contact them after surgery and let them know what the surgeon will be giving me so she can approve it for me to take .and most will work with you if you miss up!mine did i promise that a nurse told me that as long as it wasn't what they gave me i could get my meds filled wrong!this could have cost me my pain meds but my pm just told me to call and speak with her next time not the nurse!!
God bless & good luck !
Good answer Brenda. I just had surgery too, but lucky enough I told my pain mngnt doc about it, & he was right there to take care of my after surgery care. I am sorry this has happened to you, but let it be a lesson to others in the same situation. I would make an appt. to talk to the pain mgmnt doctor & explain the situation. Maybe they will take you back...
I also am being treated for low back pain. I have a bulging in my l5s1. On top of that I have Endometriosis. I decided to try to rid one pain to ease the other. Both are causing back pain. I had a scheduled Hysterectomy in witch my PCP new about. My surgeon asked that my PCP take care of my after care. She said NO. She said that her sister had a Hysterectomy and she didn't need any pain meds. Just Ibuprofen. She said to have my surgeon deal with the after care. I had my surgery and was sent home with pain meds. I was told to continue all my daily prescriptions witch included the Vicodin from my PCP. I did get a second script from my surgeon. Remember my PCP said to have my surgeon take care of it. I went to get my regular meds from my PCP and I was pulled into a room with some woman who I believe was my PCP's supervisor along with a security personal. She said that I broke my contract because I got prescriptions from two different providers.
Did not let me speak a word and sent me on my way telling me that they would no longer prescribe my back medicine. My daily Vicodin. I thought this was insane and maybe even fixable until I read this. This is crazy. I too am at home dying in pain. From 1 the surgery and 2 the back pain. NO where to turn. No one to help. I too have never in 1 yr. violated my contract. Did everything they said. Cortisone shots, trigger point injections. Every specialist they sent me to, I went. I would do anything they had asked if I thought it would help. I just can't believe that we are not allowed to go home with a prescription from a surgeon after a major surgery. I too want to know what we can do. They are treating everyone like junkies and criminal over what? A few Vicodin a week. I've seen the people who come in there and I know who the bad ones are. Laughing in the waiting room and crying once they are called. Okay I'm gonna stop. SOrry I'm in pain and very upset as I'm sure you are. They are cracking down on everything in Ma. Everyone knows every step you take. My big concern now is Am I read flagged? does every doctor know that I am now a person who broke my pain contract. Once your Red Flagged your done with. No one will ever give you medication again. It will stay in the data base and your file for the rest of your life. All because we had a Hysterectomy witch is a major surgery and got medicine for the pain. UNBELIEVABLE!!! Welcome to Massachusetts.
This shouldnt have happened. Ive. Been. Hospitalized. And they. Gave me a completely different pain. Meds. I. Told my pain. Management. Doctor. What. Happened. But. I. Was. Not. Kicked. Out. I. Vwould. Seek. Another. Pain. Management. Doctor. Often. There are misunderstandings.!
I Go to pain management myself, Therefore I know without a doubt That your pc. dr HAD To give you at least:2 Weeks noticeBefore Just completely letting you go. Here in G.a It is against the lawFor a dr.To just Drop you like You didn't even exist. Especially taking you off of your pain medication,Knowing that you can go through withdrawals, Severe pain, And everything else that comes with Being Taken Off of your medicine. In my opinion you Have a Lawsuit Against your primary care dr. Because they had all of the information they needed From your surgeon & you To keep you on as a patient.
