i am curious about the side effects or the outcome of having a titanuim cage placed around my spine. i was told by two of my doctors that they are only good for about 10 years. does anyone have suggestions about this or let me know should i have it done is it worth it??? i feel that since all thats been done so far hasnt worked this may be my only option.
What about pain patches? Like fentanyl, they are strong but work and last for days with only one patch. Plus you can still take percocets with them as needed. If it were me I would talk to my doctor some more and let them know how much pain your still in. I dont know if they prescribe fentanly patches to people with spinal injuries. I have family that takes it on a daily basis to relieve pain she has from cancer. I just know she says she wouldn't have made it this long without them.
Your best bet is to figure out what will make those muscle Spasms release. Until that is found you are just going to need stronger and stronger meds. Have you tried acupuncture once or twice a week for a couple of months to see? Or deep tissue massage? Or trigger point injections every two weeks or Botox injections? IMHO I don't think meds are going to help long term - your body is showing you specific places that need work. I think when you pay attention to those, pain relief will follow.
Hi there ksemak. Have you tried Radio Frequency injections? This procedure can be used to zap the nerve roots as well as deliver better meds directly to the facia (or other areas). Depending on the type of herniation, steroids may or may not help. Over time, these injections will turn the disc in to a wood-like substance, sometimes strengthening the spine and delaying any future surgery. Are you having any physical therapy? It's very important to continue this. Avoid surgery at all cost! Your spine will never be the same and chances are, you'll still need strong meds post surgically. Stay as active as you can. Be sure to ask your spine doc about minimally invasive techniques that could be tried. There's so many new injectable meds on the market for the spine. Steroids are pretty old school with all that's come out lately. Be sure to ask about these. I see you have better meds now? That's good to hear.
But we both know it's just a matter of time before a tolerance is built to those too. Now is the time to check out these new injections. Before the pain gets unbearable. It's so hard to get the pain in check after that. Good luck to you and hope you have a pain free new year!
I had a ruptured disk at l 4/5 and had the cage installed in 1999. Sure enough it only lasted 6 years before I began having big time problems with pain but no worse than before. The surgery was painful as all get out but after 3 months my back pain was a lot less. I was glad to have 5 years of relief and don't regret the surgery but it is a temporary fix.
i have had four back surgeries upper t-11,t12 and lower back l 7 through 3 was messed up and i had nerve damage that runs down my right leg !feels like someone is pushing with all their might on my rear end and down my leg!!i'm on fentanyl patch 75mcg's and oxy's 15 mg's x 4 a day and a muscles relaxer helps some !i also have fibomyalgia which sucks!so i do know how you feel !but mrds that helps me might not do you any good !it's just one of those things that ou have to keep trying out to make it work!we all deserve to be as pain free as possible!!! and i hope you can get the help you need!!!
If you are looking for a surgical intervention see a neurosureon instead of a pain doctor, aotho pain docs can recoomend a spinal chord stimualter that is know to help with your problems, so I am told. They are actually wanting me to try it to get down on my oxy dose of 15 mg. I do ok on the oxy, lets e get done with what I need to along with a muscle relaxer, but pain doc is pushing the stimulater, so may give itr try. His nusrse prationer said it can relieve all sorts of pain as I have neuropathes down oth legs, low back pain & arthritis all over. She seems to think it can help thiese problems too. Haven't made up my mind yet on it as don't want anything implanted im me, but may try the trial of 2 days use to see if it helps.Good luck to you...
I Have herniated discs L1-L5 and take a combination of oxy 30s and oxy 15s. I get 150 of the oxy 30s a month and 30 of the oxy 15s a month and that seems to work fine. I know it is a lot of meds, but the pain is terrible as you know. hope you find help. I know the fent. patches work, but a good friend of mine died taking those so I stay away from them.
