I have an appointment tomorrow and I am so afraid that I am going to have to live with this pain for the rest of my life. I am 62 yrs old and I am not addicted , it's just a must to kill the pain . what can I do. I am not going to live with this pain everyday. help
Darvocet is the weakest opiate there is and tests have proven that extra strength tylenol is more effective. I'm surprised that some doctors are still ordering it as all it really dose is gets people hooked in it. Even though it is a lousy pain killer (compared to most other opiates) it is still a opiate and your tolerance has started to go up as you now need 5 pills instead of 4. So you are definitely dependent on them whether you think you are or not.
Also propoxyphene (Darvon, Darvocet,642's) are quick acting and are not meant to be taking on a chronic basis. You should be on a sustained release drug which you only need to take once or twice a day. Opiates have proven to be not much help with fibromyalgia. Lyrica is the new wonder drug for this condition.
Have you studied this condition you have?? There are diets and exercises that greatly reduce the pain and anxiety... Good luck...
I hear you. every year the pain goes up. sadly there is no cure. I started on darvocet and am now on fentanyl patches, vicodin and valium... im only 29 n started showing signs of fibro when I was 8 and its only been the last 3yrs that I was finally able to get a doctor to admit on paper n to my face "Yes you have fibro, No its not all in your head but all we can do is mask the pain."
somedays I wish I had anything but fibro. I've got the most severe case my doc has come across and even he took over a year to acknowledge it being fibro. Ask your doc about the patch. I actually look forward to getting out of bed now. its been my miracle.
hi, unfortunately darvon and darvaset are two of the drugs the FDA is trying to ban. for being very addictive with not enough pain fighting qualities for the damage it does to the body. it is also very close chemical make up to methadone. you may not even know that you are addicted. its just that your fibro pain is just grater then the pain of withdraw. that was my doctors way of showing me that he was perscribing the correct meds for my pain. i told him that i wanted off of morphine. he told me to stop it and tell him what was worse,my pain in my legs or withdraw rom from meds? he was right ,my pain was worse than withdraw from the pills. i am now on suboxone, and will probably be switched to subutex soon, because of generic prices are much cheaper.if your going to your doctors soon you have to tell him darvon" propoxaphene" is not working as well and may be taking off the market.
hi friedap1, if you have been taking darvocet long enough that 4 a day is not working, sir that is one of the the signs of becoming addicted. being dependent on a drug for pain relief is in no way a sign of being weak or something to be ashamed of, its just a fact of life when you live with pain. anyway darvocet is a terrible long term pain killer. ask your doc for real pain medication. for more than a few hrs of relife. maybe something you take 1 or 2 times a day.
I've had fibro for 14 yrs & counting. In 1996 nobody believed us when we(us fibromites) said we were in pain, but finally, a new day has dawned! Everyone's regimen is usually a little different. Trying to find what works for yourself isn't an easy task. Most people I talk to take a combination of several different meds to get the relief they need, myself included.
Here's My regimen & I take generics() in all but Cymbalta:
Cymbalta 60mg once daily (morning)
Neurontin (gabapentin) 300mg 3x's day. (This drug has MANY different uses, look it up.)
Flextra 650 - when needed for muscle spasms. I don't take this often, mostly at night when I do. It makes me sleepy.
Adderall (amphetamin) 10mg 2x's daily. This is for ADDHD - but also for my sleep disorder~narcolepsy, I want to sleep ALL the time!
Ultram (Tramadol) 2 - 4x's per day for pain. I've been taking these for 10 or 12 yrs. now. Started out taking 2 - 2x's per day and now I'm up to 8, the maxium amount that can be taken. I don't know what I'll do when 8 isn't enough & I'm afraid that might happen sooner than later.
So, that's me. Yep, I rattle when I walk but hey, I Am Walking!!
Sorry for such a long post but I hope it helps. Good Luck to ya Friedap!
Darvon-65, darvocet n100 are for mild to moderate pain. Yes you will probably be addicted to an opiate ( Darvon and it's family are man-made ).But with all the modern day pain relievers, I can't fathom what It would be like to try to live with even a moderate amount of chronic pain. Hang in there. You might have to try other things but I am sure your doctor would understand if you explained as you just have here on this site. Fall Queen
