I am a Crisis Field Responder & respond to many sexual assault case. Dr's prescribe Combivir for prevention of HIV instead of a cocktail. Does just taking Combivir help?
Lamivudine/zidovudine (INNs, trade name Combivir) is a pharmaceutical treatment for HIV infection. It is a fixed dose combination of two antiretroviral drugs, lamivudine (also called 3TC, with the brand name Epivir) and zidovudine (also called AZT, with the brand name Retrovir).
Both lamivudine and zidovudine are reverse transcriptase inhibitors, which block the action of an enzyme, reverse transcriptase, that the virus requires for reproduction. It reduces the viral load in the body and raises CD4 cell count.
Combivir has some rather unpleasant side effects. Users typically report feeling tired and sick.
So simply, it prevents replication of a virus, not nec cure it.
Yes. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has recommendations for the type of HIV medication regimens that should be used after an incidental HIV exposure such as a needle stick or a broken condom.
Retrovir (AZT, Zidovudine, ZDV) 300mg twice daily + Epivir (lamivudine)300mg daily; can be taken as Combivir one tablet twice daily.
