... He broke his neck last year and had a neck fusion. He hurts bad all the time. But the meds he's on does not seem to really be helping. Can anyone tell us how he should go about asking his pain mgt dr for a change in his meds. Or what he should be changed too??
The aim when one goes on to painkillers is eliminate any pain so that the person can lead a pain free life. This does not appear to be the case for your husband and this is what you tell your pain management doctor. He may need the dose of the medications that he currently taking to be increased rather than changing them to something else, although this is an option.
Have your husband keep a diary of when he takes his medication, when it's wearing off and how much it's helping the pain - maybe on a scale of 1 to 10. Also, it may help if you go into the doctors office with your husband to confirm what he is telling the doctor and explain what you are observing in your husband. I've had my husband go into the doctors office with me on a couple of occasions, and it really has helped. I agree with what everyone has said already - that you should not mention the names of any drugs because they do consider this to be drug seeking behavior. In my case, I made sure that my doctor realized that I do not do any driving, as my husband drives me to medical appointments and church and that he does all the shopping for our household.
I hope this helps...
I would like to thank everyone for their responses to my question.. Your answers were very helpful. My husband did exactly what you guys told him and he explained in detail to the dr his problems. The dr increased his morphine to 30mg and gave him 60 7.5s for breakthrough pain as needed. Where he was only getting 15mg morphing and 15 7.5s for breakthrough pain... You guys were a really big help.. He is much more comfortable now... Thanks again to you all!!!
