... now saying that he does not have classical symptoms of depression as none of the medications worked. We are confused about this as both feel he has probably has dsythmia. In January started on Phenlazine he could become extremely aggressive and have uncontrollable rage. This has settled down slightly but he can still become very aggressive.has anyone else experienced this on the drug. The positive effect is he is able to do things around the house. But this almost becomes a obbsevive task as well. Anonymous
I found no phenlazine, but a phenazine. I hope that's the right drug. I found no such side effect as you list among the patient reviews which means that no one coming to this site reported having that behavior. The drug manufacturer has had "agitated behavior" reported. Nevertheless, your husband experienced it and needs to stay off of the drug. There are other drugs to choose from.
Regarding his dysthymia, or depression, please review the symptoms at the sites below and compare to your husband:
Just because an effective drug is not found for depression, it doesn't mean the person isn't depressed. Also you list OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) type behavior. Both need to be treated. Change Drs. if needed. Your current Dr. seems to be out of ideas. Your husband may be better off with a good psychiatrist since accurate diagnosing is needed as well as treatment.
One of my sons has never had an antidepressant work for him. He is profoundly depressed. After 4 years of trying different antidepressants, he's elected to get ECT (Electro-Convulsive Therapy) from a psychiatrist who specializes in this. It's far safer than in the past. There is little to be concerned about in it's present form except that anesthesia is used. After his 1st treatment he felt better than he'd ever felt before. It lasted 10 minutes which is fine, the process involves a series of treatments and possibly some "tune-ups" afterward. Something to consider if no drug helps your husband.
Another thought: Can this aggressive behavior possibly need counseling? Was he ever aggressive before taking phenazine?
