What do I do if I think I may have taken too much Humalog, thinking it was my Levemir pen? I took 60 units, my blood sugar was 308. Should I do anything to reverse the affects?
You need to know what your correction ratios are to get started.
Blood sugar correction ratio (1 unit will lower my blood sugar X points)
Carb correction ratio (1 unit will correct X grams of carb)
Being that your blood sugar was 308, for me I shoot for 150, you can shoot for what ever you want, but keep in mind, in this situation you need a buffer. My correction ratio is 15:1, so thats 10 units I would need to get myself back to the "normal" level over 2-4 hours.
That leaves 50 units of insulin manage. The next thing you need to consider is what your carb to insulin ratio is, mine is 5:1, every 5 carbs I need 1 unit of insulin.
So to get my blood sugar to be 150 given a dosage of 50 units, I would need to consume 250g of carbs in the first 2 hours of the 4 hour effective cycle of the insulin.
I would recommend using things like OJ or regular soda products vs food here. While you could eat your way out of the hole it will be much easier to drink your way out.
(other answer) While protein does have an effect on blood sugar, it is not nearly as potent when it comes to bumping up blood sugar, and your stomach would probably burst with the amount of protein you would need to correct for this much insulin.
I have been managing my Type 1 diabetes for 25 years now, were this situation happen to me, this is how I would manage it. You will want to check your blood sugar every 20-30 minutes. Keep in mind, it takes time for your digestive system to turn any food into glucose, just as it takes time to bring your blood sugar down from 308. Juices are going to be faster than solid food.
Also keep in mind that the effectiveness of insulin is not linear in nature, its most potent time is going to be 30min to 120 minutes after injection. If you get to 180 to 210 minutes after injection, you will want to back off on the juice/food consumption. You dont want to whip saw yourself.
