Narcotics includes a very large group of medications. It totally depends on what is being prescribed. Each med has it's range and specialty. Methadone for example if prescribed for pain often times will not be given over 30 to 40 milligrams per month, although more technically could be given. On the other hand, something that's at the very bottom of the scale like Tramadol, technically a narcotic due to it's activity on the Opioid sensors, can not be prescribed over 300 to 400 mgs. Totally depends on the med.
