the addiction was to vicodin/oxycondone for 1-2, possibly 3 years. So how long should the person take the suboxone to overcome the opiate addiction?
It depends on the level and severity of your addiction. How many pills were you going through a day? 10? 20? 30? Suboxone is not a cure-all for addiction and if it was it would be a miracle. Be aware that even suboxone has potential for abuse so you don't want to stay on it too long. Some people need 1-2 years on it before they try and reduce dosage and usage, but I wouldn't recommend that long. I'm not a qualified doctor, but I am a qualified addict and know all about opiate addiction and the hell it creates, as well as the hell of suboxone.
I have been addicted to pain killers for 6 years and have finally quit, cold-turkey, very recently. It is extremely hard, but I tried to quit two years ago using suboxone and found it ineffective, as my addiction was too strong. I was taking 4 suboxone daily for several months, then reduced down until I ran out. I will say this, try it, and if it works, great! But be aware that coming off suboxone was the worst withdrawal I have EVER gone through as an addict. Suboxone sticks to the opiate receptors like super-glue and takes forever to cycle out of your system. I was sick as a dog for 6 days straight and lost ten pounds. It was awful. Don't simply rely on suboxone to beat your addiction. Get mental health help and talk to a sponsor or NA. People think suboxone is the easy way out, like I did, but it's just drug replacement therapy and every true addict knows that never works.
