How long does Depakote remain in a 75 yr old persons system when discontinued or cut back on dosage?
Added 22 Sep 2010:
This man is in the hospital due to serious injuries from a fall yesterday at an assisted living facility.
Just as a caution the other medicines may also be contributing to his condition.
The mean terminal half-life for valproate monotherapy ranged from 9 to 16 hours following oral dosing regimens of 250 to 1000 mg.
It takes 5.5 x elimination half lifes for a medicine to be eliminated from ones system, but may take longer in patients whose renal function, etc. aren't 100%. So generally in a healthly adult elimination of Depakote would take approximately 88 hours (5.5 x 16 hours).
