Stage III Breast Cancer Metastic, came back after only 2 yrs. Have been givin Herceptin for over a year... Had it on the first bout in 2007..I'm starting to have side effects, numbness in my left leg, paper-thin fingernails, no sex life, nausea.
I am unsure of your question... you were treated with Herceptin in 2007? Was it given as an adjunct therapy with other chemo? Have you been having Herceptin injections for over a year?
I had Herceptin injections for one year and experienced numbness for at least six months out, nausea, too (in fact I'm 1.5 years out from Herceptin and still have nausea). One very unpleaseant side effect that I have encountered is cognitive challenges - mainly short term memory, however, I cannot determine if this is due to the Herceptin or total chemotherapy TC+H.
Have you experienced cognitive challenges?
I look forward to hearing more about your experience.
Hope this finds you feeling better and in good spirits.
I am currently receiving H infusions every 4 weeks for 3+ years now (3.5 + 1 year in 2005). I haven't found anyone else who is receiving H long-term. I am fortunate to date - tolerate fatigue, bad fingernails, sensitive skin on bottom of my feet. (I also get an injection of Fasladex every 4 weeks.) My first diagnosis was in 2000. Every day is a gift!
I've been searching for an answer to this question, too. The general theory seems to be: indefinitely. That's how long I have been prescribed Herceptin for. I have been on Herceptin since June 2004, initially with Navelbine, but alone since October 2004. I called Genentech and was told that there are people who have been taking it since it was put on the market in 1989. I also know that there are at least 2 other people who have been on it longer than me at my oncology clinic. Because of patient privacy rules, I don't know who they are, so I decided to look for a support group on line.
I was taking Herceptin every 3 weeks, initially, went to every 4 a couple years ago, and I've recently switched to every 8 weeks. I have some long term side effects, too, but I have always attributed them to the chemotherapy treatments I received before Herceptin - can't have sex, thinner hair, cognitive issues...
But, to answer your question, my impression is that there isn't a specific protocol for long term use of Herceptin, but there are plenty of people on it indefinitely.
