Depakote is given as a preventative medication. It is given to reduce the number and severity of migraines. You may need to take Depakote for around 4 weeks before you notice any improvement.

If I remember correctly (and I have been on Depakote ER 750 mg/daily for approximately 7 years) it took between perhaps 2-3 weeks before I noticed a significant amount of change in my migraines. I still get them OCCASSIONALLY but I no longer go to the ER for shots and rarely have to use my migraine medication. I hope this helps and best of luck to you!
