Hi AnyWife-I would love to tell you that it is simple, but I specialized in Dual Disorders as a Psychologist, and have worked with many Psychiatrists for 20 years... and, each case is so unique. Try to view it as a road map, and you're on a drive to "mental health". Many symptoms are considered "shadow" symptoms of a certain disorder (DO), such that they are not severe enough to warrant a full diagnosis (Dx) of Schizophrenia, Bipolar, etc, but are significant enough to be noted. For instance, being Schizophrenic or Bipolar can cause anxiety, but in and of itself, symptoms may not be significant/specific enough to substantiate a Dx of Generalized Anxiety DO, for example.
I spent lots of time with patients, and used several diagnostic tools, including subjective and objective questionnaires & tests, so that I could arrive at a thorough and complete Dx for that individual. Once we have a Dx, we can decide on treatment methods and medications, if any, to begin trials. It can be a long road, but definitely worth it when answers are found! I also have my own Dx (Bipolar 1 & ADHD), and although not diagnosed as OCD, I can be very compulsive (shadow symptom of ADHD). Its a science but also an art of being able to recognize and tease apart all the variables affecting an individual; whether symptoms are episodic, continuing, severe or mild. There are definite & specific criteria for each Dx and DO.
Its crucial for you/him to feel you have a complete Dx from a good Psychiatrist (beyond the ER Dr), who has run a full battery of tests (just like lipid blood panels!). Then, find a Therapist/Psychologist that your husband likes/feels comfortable with (sometimes the Psychiatrist will also do therapy). Its like any other relationship... has to be a good fit. And, between the 2 specialists, you will hopefully find the map that leads him (& you) to "mental health"! Its normal to ask for confirmation of insurance up front. Otherwise, you have to pay up front, and then submit your own claim form for reimbursement... that's a hassle! Good luck and please keep us informed! Jillian
