My son was started on guafacine and it is a blood pressure medication. Im not really ok with starting him on medication but really not sure about giving him something that will mess with his blood pressure.
Did they give him this to take at night and another, stimulant type, drug to take in the AM? My son takes Concerta in the morning which is a stimulant drug which in ADHD kids has the effect of calming them down and helping them to focus. He takes clonidine at night to help him sleep after the effects of the stimulant. Clonidine is a blood pressure medication too but it works different in kids. It helps them sleep well after taking the stimulants. It is usually a very low dose they use and wont affect his blood pressure-like I said they work a little differently in kids. This is what my childs psychiatrist explained to me. My sons blood pressure is fine.
It took me a long time to decide to put my son on medication (he was 7) but he was so impaired it was jeopardizing his education and his social life therefore his self esteem. Putting him on medications was the best thing I could have done for him. We saw an immediate improvement within hours of starting his medications! I wish, in hindsight, I would have put him on sooner. Guafacine is a newer drug and I'm not as familiar with its use. I was lucky with my son that we hit on a good combo for him right away. We did try a few others but did not have good results. If this is the right medicine for him you will know pretty quick. If not, there are others to try. This one is nice in that it is not a stimulant. My son didnt do as well with the non-stimulant types. I hope this works well for your son. It is so important in the early years that they are able to focus and learn to the best of their abilities! My son started with symptoms at the age of three or so. I really wish we had medicated in Kindergarten when it was first really noticeable that something was hampering his abilities. His social skills at age 7 were more like what a 3 or 4 year old would do. The medicines helped him to calm down and focus and be able to sit still in his chair and listen to his teacher rather than being on the floor looking to see what kind of rocks were down there! He went from being almost kicked out of school to being the Student of the Month after starting his meds. I cant say how much of a profound difference it made in his life!
Like I said, he takes clonidine which is a B/P med and his blood pressure has been fine!
