... tablet and suffered a anaphylactic shock. I have taken this antibiotic once before without this happening. Could someone explain why this happened yesterday. Thank-you. Cathy
Hi Cathy, & welcome to the site. Alleriges can happen at any time in our lives. I had taken pennicillian as a child off & on & never had a problem, but when I was pregnant, I had a severe reaction as you did to augmentin. Don't ever take this med again for sure. I am sure your doctor will advise you to stay away from any pennicillin as augmentin is amoxicillin. You may have reacted to something else in the med such as a filler ect,,, but don't take the chance. You also should have an epi-pen on hand anytime you are prescribed another antibioitc just in case. Not knowing what you reacted to, & knowing that allergies can come on at anytime in your lfe, it would be wise to be very cautious. There are many different antibiotics available for you to take. Wishing you the best, & please read the link below...
Allergies can develop over time. The fact that we took something before doesn't mean we won't react now. My ex was on penicillin and felt better so stopped taking it. I scolded him to make him finish them, but there was a gap of a day where he hadn't taken it. The next pill he took he had an anaphylactic reaction.
It is not unusual to take a medication , even multiple times and have no problems with it and then all of the sudden become allergic to it, I had this happen to me with Codeine! I was able to take Tylenol with Codeine for years and then one day I ended up in the hospital with anaphylactic shock just like you. I'm honestly not sure why this happens, maybe other members here can explain why, but I do know that it can happen with even foods. But i am glad that you were able to get medical treatment in time to save your life.
