I am alcohol dependent (functioning) and have been for around 3 years. I reached 200 units per week before seeking help. Spent 2 weeks in detox and see a therapist on a weekly basis. My drinking is now down to 70 units per week with the help of therapy and Nalmefene and expect this decline to continue. I had an LFT of 49 in Dec 2016 and it has increased to 58 in July 2017. My therapist was very concerned, but my doctor was not concerned. It is causing me a lot of anxiety which is the underlying mental condition causing me to drink. Should I push the doctor for further tests?
Hi Mark, your ALT level is not much of a cause for concern; that it is increasing is. For an alcoholic you should have an AST to ALT ratio of 2 to 1 (indicating alcoholic liver disease). When I was still drinking I had AST levels higher than 330 before quitting. An elevated GGT level is also not good.
I doubt a doctor will be able to determine a mental condition based on your drinking, you need to talk to a qualified professional specialist.
