Hi I was prescribed amoxicillin yesterday for a strep throat. I am currently taking Ortho cyclen birth control. I read it makes birth control less effective. I had unprotected sex a day before and i was wondering if there is any chance i can get pregnant, if there could be sperm still left inside?
It is very unlikely. Sperm die pretty quickly in the vaginal environment. Just be sure that you use a back up method, like a condom, the whole time you are taking the antibiotic and for 14 days after you finish. You may experience breakthrough bleeding while taking the antibiotic so dont be surprised if that happens. Just keep taking your pills as directed each day as you usually do and use that back up as I said above. If you do experience breakthrough bleeding, you may or may not have a period on the week of inert pills so dont be alarmed if you get breakthrough bleeding then dont get a period while taking the inert pills. It just means the antibiotics worked in the same manner the inert pills do and your period came a little early. Again, just keep taking pills as directed each day as you normally would. By next cycle you should be back to normal.
