Yes, there are things you can do to prevent infecting your family.
Herpes is usually passed on by direct skin contact.
Avoid skin-to-skin or mucous membrane contact eg. kissing
Good hygeine is essential -avoid sharing items that may have come in contact with a cold sore - eg. facecloths, towels, glasses, cutlery etc.
