I have severe anxiety and panic attacks and have tried various meds but have horrible side effects so was planning on trying a more natural remedy, any input?
I would check with the doctor first. Have you tried klonopin? It works very good for anxiety. .5 MG would be low dose and this lasts longer in your system. It's an older drug and inexpensive. Maybe you can ask about it. Valerian root helps some people. But you must inquire if you are on other meds.
You can try herbal meds, but as Cleo said best to not take with other meds. I also heard that Valerian Root is good for anxiety but that you have to go off of it for month or so. I am not sure why but you can google it and probably find out. Klonopin is a benzodiazepine you may build tolerance and dependence. They can be a good temporary treatment. There is also Buspar that is non-addictive and may help. If your anxiety and panic are severe you may have to seek professional advise. I have both disorders so I can relate. It can rule your life if left untreated.
Hope you find something that works for you.
Good Evening Wyoming; From all the years that I have suffered from Anxiety, and panic attacks with agoraphobia. I have, to be frank with you nothing over the counter well even touch these symptoms and even the best of the Natural pathic medications or in the nature stores well not touch true Anxiety.
IF you really want to get better you got to a real doctor. And get evaluated to see what type of care or medications could benefit you the most. And no matter what other medications you may be taking and more so Naturalpathic medications or any other can have serious effects with other prescription medications. Or you may have to clear your system and even wait for 4 to 8 weeks to get all of the strange stuff out of your system. So the doctor can give you something that well really benefit you and your condition. They have so much better medications now than there were 40 years ago or whenever I started having problems. So please don't waste your time and go make an appointment with your doctor or call the family doctor. There is nothing wrong with seeing a psychiatrist that knows different medications that can get you back on the right chemical balance Please do this as soon as you can Chuck1957
So, short answer-depends, everyone responds to therapies differently. If you are not currently taking any medications and do not have any health conditions that may prohibit your use of over-the counter medicines, many people prefer to try a natural path vs. Western psychopharmacology. If available in your area, Naturopathic Docs manage many people with all natural remedies effectively. One drawback, is they tend to be expensive along with treatment recommendations. If cost is an issue you may want to ask your primary their opinion.
I have to agree with the others, for severe cases of anxiety nothing natural comes close. Again, everyone is different. I previously used Ashwagandha for anxiety and it helped. My anxiety became manageable, but it has very effect for my panic disorder. Ashwagandha also lowers cortisol levels so again, individual responses vary. The key is not to prolong treatment. I hope you are feeling better soon. This is the hardest journey. Take care!
