My left foot has been swollen for almost 10 years. I have taken a water pill, and even have received herbal treatment but my foot is still swollen.
I suffer from edema in one lower leg also. I had to resort to compression socks to keep it under control. When you are lying down with the compression socks on, you should find your body will slowly eliminate the fluid. I did not find diuretics helpful in getting rid of the edema.
Stephen gave you a really good answer.
Is your BP normal?
Do you have varicose veins?
Keep your legs elevated whenever you are sitting.
Avoid salt of any kind! There is salt normally in food which will provide all you need.
Stay away from canned and frozen foods because they have increased sodium and preservatives.
Throw your salt shaker away!
Avoid foods that taste salty like ham, salted butter, etc.
Learn to read labels to check sodium content.
I agree with Steve that compression stockings will offer you the best result.
Continue doing the suggestion I offered in addition to the stockings.
Get the socks that are thigh high. The ones below your knees may constrict the big veins that are below your knee.
You can by them at CVS,etc. however choosing the right size may be difficult .
If you get a prescription from your doctor, you can get the medical grade. A medical store will measure you and most likely will be covered partially or 100% under insurance or Medicare.
Let me warn you that they are difficult getting on! Ask for help if someone is available.
Also you should put them on before getting up in the morning when the swelling is ar its lowest. If you need to go to the bathroom first, do it quickly and putting them on is easier in a recliner. Using a good moisturizer the night before will help them slide easier.
You have to slowly inch them up while keeping snug and WITHOUT wrinkles.
It gets much easier as time goes on so don't give up!
I hope this helps.
