Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone produced by the fertilized egg, after conception. It helps to promote and maintain pregnancy.

When an hCG shot is given to a woman, it stimulates the ovaries to produce and release eggs. When given to a man, it maintains the development of testosterone.

There is some theory that it can cause loss of fat tissue. The FDA has stated that the use of the hCG hormone as a weight loss tool is both ineffective and dangerous.
Homeopathic and over the counter hCG diet products have been declared fraudulent and illegal.
