Looking for other options. I have been honest with my Dr. they dont work long enough. Any other options? Tired of the spasms. Also take oxycodone makes me tense up even more. HELP PLEASE
First this is my experience with Soma, i became addicted because it did not work and i kept upping my dosage, I ended up getting a DUI because of it, soma is a very bad drug i was on it for 10yrs. I finally after the DUI had to get off the drug, for muscle spams i went to valium and xanax. i know xanax isn't a muscle relaxer but it's for anxiety which tenses you up and makes your muscles tight, the xanax helped me relax and in-turn helped with the spasms.
there are pther options such as Skelaxin, Robaxin, Flexeril, amd severa; others. Soma is going to be taken off the market some time this year, Soma breaks down into a drug called Meprobamate which is an old sleeping medicine that was used in the 1950's-1960's, it's breakdown is into Miltown one reason they are removing this is because it is misused and is an addictive drug as well, there are many other muscle relaxants that are found to be as effective as Soma, It has been removed from many European markets already. there are many others that are suppose to work as well probably since I am not aware of your medical history then talk to your doctor and tell him about the oxycodone making you yense up even more he may be able to prescribe a drug that will work even better than the soma has in the past. It is my sincere hope that you are able to find a medicine that will work and be effective for you. take care and keep us posted
There are definitely other options. Baclofen is a good suggestion from Laurie. There is also Tizanidine. I was taken off Soma and put on Tizanidine. Tizanidine is ok. I dont think it works quite as well as Soma but it is close. The is also Amrix which is a long acting formula of cyclobezeprine that you take one capsule every 24 hours. If you have trouble with meds not lasting long enough, this may be a better option for you. If the oxycodone causes you to tense more, perhaps you might try another pain reliever. Have you tried any of the morphine products? They might help to relax you more than the oxycodone does. As Caringsonbj states, there are rumors Soma is going to be taken off the US market anyway some time this year.
I have been through this 30 plus years and I understand your pain. The doctor that first diagnosed me put me on Flexeril and Valium. He also had Fibromyalgia with severe muscle spasms. It worked better for me than anything I've ever had, but doctors do not want to write valium. I have tried about every muscle relaxer on the planet. I take Soma once a day even though my prescription is 3 times daily. I take Oxycontin with Percocet for breakthrough pain and I take Xanax at night only. I have learned that if I get a good night's sleep I do not have as many spasms. I get knots down my back and have to have them injected to break them up.
This is a trial and error situation. What works great for me might not help you. Soma is one of the better muscle relaxers available. The baclofen didn't help me at all.
Are you on a good schedule? I found that a schedule for sleep, food, stretching exercises, rest during the day and a little work help more than anything. If I have a bad day I will take a Soma during the day or a 1/2 percocet. On a good day I will take less. Have you research diet and stretching exercises for your muscles? I also cut out all caffiene, soda, white four, etc. That may not help you, but it did me. Best of luck and my prayers are with you.
