I have been on Asacol since Jan 09. In May while 5 mos pregnant I became very anemic and had a blood transfusion and put on Prednisone. Since thenmy doctor has tried weining me off the Prednisone, however they symptoms flare every time i get down to 20 mg. I am going to start Mercaptopurine tomorrow while continuing the Prednisone for 3 mos while I decrease off the dosage. Has anyone tried similar med's and what results did you have?
I have been on asacol, and prednisone for severe, late stage crohns disease. I had a real tough time coming off of prednisone and in fact was told I would be on it the rest of my life. with careful slow weaning, I was able to get off and stay off until years later and another flairup. The everyother day doseage decrease at and below 20mg worked best for me but it would depend on how high your dose has been and how low you can go. Later when i had a flairup, my doctor put me on asacol. It helped but not as directly as the predinsone. It took longer, didnt work as well but came with less side effects. I prefer asacol if/when possible. right now, i take nothing. I found that stress reduction worked the best for me.
I suffered from the same problem. I understand that is it not great to be on Prednisone long term, but the drug worked so well. Everytime I went from 40 to 20 - I relapsed and had to go back up to 40. I worked very closely with my doctor, and after 6 months (and talk of immunosuppressent drugs) I was finally able to wean off. I think the wean schedule went something like this, each level for 7 days. 40, 30, 20, 15, 10, 7.5, 5, 2.5, 0. There might have also been some other levels in there too, I cannot remember (maybe a 35 and/or 25). I remember it took forever. But then I was done, and off prednisone. I have gone back on about once per year, during a flare, and use the same system to get back off. Although with the flares I have only needed to go up to 20 for a starting dose, which makes the down-dose faster.
At one point, when down dosing from 40-20 was not working, I think my doctor was convinced that I would need immunosuppressent thearpy. I did not want to do that, so I was glad the down-dose worked.
