I have been on the drug for over three years and i'm five months pregnant,my doctor told me the drug will not hurt the baby.Everything I read say's it's unknown that it harms newborns, unknown doesn't mean it can't happen. Has anyone heard of any birth defects or disablies? They say my baby looks perfect, but what about his mental state, addication or withdrawals? Patty
There are no good studies on humans (surprisingly) that opioids are teratogenic, generally they are not, I have seen studies on rats, and opioids are only teratogenic in extreme qtys. A newborn will be born addicted if the mother uses throughout pregnancy, that's a sure thing, but the drug will be excreted in your breast milk which will lessen w/d, then it's possible to taper the child off later. You should talk to your OB about the risks.
There are no studies that I'm aware of about mothers using buprenorphine during pregnancy. However it's common knowledge that a mother going through opiate detox during pregnancy can result in a miscarriage. The mother and the baby can both be successfully tapered off the suboxone after delivery relatively easily. It's obvious that the first choice would be no drug dependency during pregnancy but if the mother is already opiate dependent prior to becoming pregnant then it appears both mother and baby are safer dealing with the drug taper after delivery than detoxing during the pregnancy.
