My pharmacy switched me to Orsythia (I had been taking Aviane) when I went to get my refill. I know they are both generics of Alesse, but since I've had such trouble in the past with birth control, and was doing great on Aviane with no side effects at all, I'm a bit nervous. Has anyone noticed any problems with Orsythia they didn't have on Aviane?
Did your pharmacy say why they switched you from aviane to orsythia?? I know they both come from the same med,but if the aviane was working for you,why would they change it?Unless they ran out of the aviane and filled the other in replacement, but if you are nervous and have had trouble in the past with birth control pills and you are used to this one,i would suggest you give them a call and ask for the one you are used to.
It may be no difference switching, but if you are nervous about trying a different brand then explain this to them and they should be able to give you your normal refill.
Just my thoughts.
The same thing happened to me. I refill my scripts through Express Scripts, and I just received my refill today. I noticed the packaging was completely different and the brand name says Orsythia, but the dosage is exactly the same. I called my local CVS to speak to a pharmacist (since Express Scripts is impossible to get a hold of), and she said they were exactly the same, just as Lutera and Aviane are the same. She said there should not be any difference in switching. I know I was switched from Lutera to Aviane a few years ago as well and everything went smoothly, so I'm hoping this will be the same. I will update in a month or so once I start taking the Orsythia.
I'm so glad there were posts about this. I've been having multiple symptoms since my drug store switched me to Orsythia from Aviane which I've been on for years. Thank God I called pharmacy they said I wasn't the first to complain and that they could special order the Aviane, cause I've had heavy bleeding, nausea and been very emotional. I thought it was just stress but glad I made the connection and that others were talking about it online. So check with your pharmacist, it's not that they stopped making Aviane it's that distributors are now pushing Orsythia. Wherever you get your BC, they should be able to get you Aviane still
I am so glad to find these posts on here. Express Scripts sent me Orsythia after taking Aviane for years. Ever since then, I have been SUPER emotional. I mean - ready to cry at any moment at any time of the month. I have also had very angry and aggressive feelings that I am having trouble keeping in check. I took three packs worth of Orsythia and felt horrible the entire time. I had a prescription refilled at the pharmacy in between shipments and they gave me Aviane again. After a few days, I felt SO much better and I was so happy. But then I got my refill for my new prescription from Express Scripts and they sent me Orsythia again. I am on pack number two and am back to feeling the same way. I had to call my doctor and talk to them today because I am on the verge of a breakdown. I know you don't know me, but this isn't normal. I am a happy person and this is just ridiculous! No one should have to feel this way.
I am also glad to have found this . I did not notice anything out of the ordinary while on Aviane but since being switched to Orsytia approx. 3 months ago, I have had slight mood swings, anxiety, and periods at random times . I also am pretty sure I may have gained a bit of weight. I decided just to stop and see if I noticed a difference. I stopped about a week ago and already I feel like myself again. I think it's wrong pharmacy's try to mess with prescriptions !
okay so I was switched over to Orsythia in October ( i had been taking Avaine too). When the pharmacist gave me the generic I was kinda nervous! I took it will reluctance. I started to get little red patches on my neck that kinda spread. I thought it was eczema (since i was blessed with that ;) so i let it go. 10 days later I went to the doc for something random and said "oh yeah, i think i have bad eczema on my back, can you give me something" she barely looked at it and gave me a steroid cream. It was spreading to my stomach so i went to the dermatologist and he told me to take claritan daily for 10 days then claritan and Zyrtec every day for 1 month... okay... wasnt helping much so at my follow up 1 month later it was better but i noticed a few acne looking bumps on my cheeks (face) he derm said "looks like you have a little acne"...
i though he was crazy since i never had acne like this! a few days later i was given the Avaine again and my rash seemed to be gone... however I BUSTED OUT in a super crazy "contact dermititis" on my face and looked like a strawberry! I went to the doc who had NO CLUE what it was and even brought in a random doc for help! the derm gave me a steroid ointment for my face and it comes and goes... with like a red flush to my skin... my body rash was better until 15 days ago they gave me that Orsythia again (i waited until the last minute and they couldnt order the Avaine in time) and low and behold i have a super itchy rash on my belly/chest and neck... i looked at the ingredients with a fine tooth comb and the ONLY difference is RED DYE #40 and Vitamin E... I think there is a link there! so I am going to the derm to get allergy patch testing to see what in the world is going on with my body! YIIIKES... next time I am reluctant to take something... I should prob listen... if it ain't broke... don't fix it! haha! I hope no one else has this happen to them but if it does you are not crazy and i hope this helps!
OMG! YES! My pharmacy switch me to orsythia without even telling me so I just tried it since I never did before. I have just finish my second pack and I have had break thru bleeding straight for 2 months and because of this I don't know when I actually start my period at the end of my pack since I am bleeding every day anyways. I called around and one pharmacy had 1 pack of avianne left. I had to have my prescription transferred just to get this pack. Then once I picked it up I was told they would not be getting anymore avianne only orsythia. I can try a local pharmacy but they only carry lassina which is another generic for avianne but I don't know if that's worth trying. I'm thinking of just using condoms once this pack runs out. But last time I was off the pill I bleed for over a month and had worst cramps ever and got pregnant. I really feel comfortable on a pill vs condoms but not if I'm bleeding every single day what's the point?
I realize this is an older question, but I created an account solely to give my thoughts on this.
DO NOT SWITCH if you have the choice.
I did two weeks ago, which is exactly why I have been researching this drug.
I've been taking Aviane for 7 years, and two weeks ago when I went to pick up my pills at the pharmacy, they handed me Orsythia.
I told them I'd prefer to have the one I'd always taken because my body is very sensitive to change. The pharmacist then convinced me there would be "no changes, this was just the generic brand, the ingredients are the same, the dosage is the same"
He convinced me after a few minutes that everything would be fine, even after I told him i preferred my regular one (Aviane)
So that was two weeks ago, and today I am breakthrough bleeding.
This came as a shock, as this has never happened to me before.
I was kind of scared, that's when I started looking into this Orsythia.
I have become a raving bitch as of this past week. I couldn't quite figure it out. But it downed on me... New BC pill...
and I've become every overly emotional, which is extremely out of the ordinary as well.
I'm breaking out on my jawline (hormonal breakouts) and I NEVER, EVER do usually.
They're the big painful ones that you can't force to come to a head
I am extremely upset, even more so than i usually would be, just due to the hormonal imbalances caused by this... :(
Please, ladies, beware!
Stick to what you're used to it if works.
Do not accept this from your pharmacist.
Insist on your normal one as I truly do not want to see this happening to anyone else. They are able to order Aviane, they are trying to push Orsythia for some reason though. Probably cheaper ingredients.
I hope this helps someone.
I was switched to Orsythia this past summer after taking Aviane for a year and a half. It started out fine, but a few months ago my periods would either start way early or late. Last month I barely had a period. It started early and lasted the normal 7 days but it wasn't normal. I'm supposed to start my period today, but honestly I have no idea if I will! I have the normal symptoms that its coming, but nothing. I'm pretty sure I'm not pregnant either. This has happened before and it's always been on Orsythia. Never on Aviane! I get it at the local CVS and they told me they changed it because the state is deciding which version of the original drug to use... that just doesn't make sense to me!
I stumbled upon this thread after experiencing my on issues with Osythia.
I had been on Aviane for about 6 years. I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)and struggle with irregular, heavy, frequent periods accompanied by severe cramping and altered moods. I was ecstatic to find Aviane after a decade of trying unsuccessful bc's to treat my PCOS symptoms. Aviane was the first that finally worked.
In November of this past year my CVS pharmacy notified me that Aviane was no longer available. They assured me like others that Orsythia was the mirror generic of Aviane and would be no different. Skeptic I contacted my Drs office, spoke with a nurse who confirmed the two drugs "appeared" to be the same.
Almost immediately I stared bleeding and spotting erratically. An extreme difference from the very regular/controlled periods I had for the last 6 yrs on Aviane. Another two months later my bleeding started and did not stop for 3.5 weeks. As if I was on no birth control or medication to treat my symptoms. The pharmacy and my drs office claimed it must be a coincidence or that I had just "gotten used to the BC". I'm sorry but after no problems for 6 years ever, a sudden change in Bc and then immediate change in my cycle-- that is no coincidence.
I just switched Drs and got put on a new Bc, a generic for seasonale... Fingers are crossed and I will update in a week or so.
I am so relieved to see that I am not the only person to have this happen to them. I was taking Aviane for 3 years, loved it, it worked great for me. Then my pharmacy switched me to Orsythia because there was a shortage of Aviane or some stocking issue. Two months after taking it I thought was pregnant because I was moody, nauseous all the time, and always hungry and I didn't get my period. My whole family was convinced and getting excited, my husband was getting excited and then I took a test and it was negative.
So my doctor wrote me a prescription for a new birth control but my pharmacy filled the Orsythia because it was generic for Alesse. I spoke to two out of three pharmacists at my pharmacy, both female and both no help. They told me that they gave me the generic of what the doctor wrote for me and that was that. Am so frustrated because they won't listen to me and give me what my doctor wanted me on. You would think they would be sympathetic knowing how difficult it is to find the right birth control but nope. So now back to using condoms because my pharmacy won't listen to me.
Yessssss!!! I did it and I too, signed up just to respond to this message! I'm a raging bitch, I'm exhausted, bloated and feel heavier like I've gained weight. This is bullshit. I'm changing back. I contacted my pharmacy and switched to a different pharmacy that has Aviane. So upset. Glad I researched as well and saw everybody's comments.
YES. I was prescribed Aviane a few years ago and everything was fine. Then my pharmacy, CVS, switched me to Lessina. I gave it a try and I actually have no problems with Lessina (although I think a lot of women do have bad side affects). Now the pharmacy switched me to Orsythia. I gave it a try... HORRIBLE side affects. Very bad mood swings, depression, worst acne I've ever had, and debilitating breat pain. These side affects started after just one week on Orsythia. My Doctor instructed the pharmacy that I could only take Lessina, no substitutions. That worked for a few months, then last month pharmacy gave me Orsythia again, against my doctor's orders. Now they tell me they no longer carry Lessina. I don't know what I'm going to do, I absolutely cannot take Orsythia. I guess I'll check with other pharmacies to see if they carry it. When I told the pharmacist that I had terrible side affects on Orsythia he said he had heard that quite alot from other women!!
CVS switched my pill from Aviane to Orsynthia because they "stopped carrying it all together" but told me orsynthia was the same thing as aviane. I'm on my second pack of orsynthia and the past few days I've been bloated and tired. I started bleeding randomly yesterday and it's only getting heavier (My period isn't due for another week and a half and I never have spotting in between or am early or have any other complications concerning my period). I just got off the phone with my CVS pharmacist and he said I have to go to another pharmacy to get aviane. Just called Walgreens and they don't carry aviane either. Just called my gyn to see if I can get aviane ANYWHERE and if I can't, if I can be put on a different prescription cuz this orsynthia crap aint working for me. Wonder what is going on...
