I am currently taking Flomax and had some side effects so the Dr switched me to Rapaflo. I do not like drugs and am wondering if I should have the surgery?
I started taking Rapaflo a few days ago because my bladder remains overactive from years of BPH, but I have taken Flomax, Avodart, and other drugs for BPH. They all helped, but had side effects. After many years, when I reached a frequency of urination at night of 5-8 times, I decided to have green light laser surgery, which with an experienced surgeon is very low risk for incontinence and impotence. It is done on an outpatient basis and really worked for me. That was about 4 years ago. I strongly recommend it if medicines aren't working for you. TURP is a high risk procedure that is only performed as a last resort. Stay away from it.
I had the TURP done about a year ago. I don't think I gave the meds enough time. I very much regret having it done. First of all, it didn't help. I still have symptoms. Second, I can no longer ejaculate. Climaxes are bone dry. And finally, the catheter stays in for an entire week following the surgery. Not to mention that the week with the catheter was the worse pain the human body could tolerate. It brought me to tears in the middle of the night. If I were you, I would talk to your urologist and use the TURP surgery as the very last resort. Good luck. Hope you get better.
